02:20 am       1500 blk Sanchez               Stolen Vehicle/Property

Officers Tam, Hauscarriague, Almaguer, Burke, Chan, and Guzman were working in plain clothes in an auto-boost abatement operation. They saw a man walking up and down streets, looking into cars. The officers then saw the man drive off in what appeared to be a stolen car. The car was followed as it drove off in a dangerous manner. The driver then sped away as the officers tried to stop the vehicle. The suspect and vehicle were later found by the CHP, after the suspect crashed the car against a guard-rail while driving without headlights on. The suspect was on probation, and a search of his residence yielded multiple stolen items, which the suspect admitted to stealing. Report number 100923128

Officer Gonzalez and Officer Archilla responded to the report of an assault. The victim said that as he was walking home he was punch and kicked by a man because the victim sometimes talks to the suspect’s step-daughter. The suspect denied hitting the victim, and said that the victim had been banging on his garage door. The suspect was given a citation for battery. Report number 100923786

Officer Jones and Officer Khan were dispatched to the report of the sound of glass breaking. They arrived and met with the resident, who said that she arrived home to find her rear windows broken. Nothing was missing from inside. Report number 100920776

Officer Johnson responded to the report of a possible robbery. The victim was standing at a bus stop when a man approached him and tore his necklace off his neck. The suspect then got into the passenger side of a waiting vehicle and drove away. The suspect was described as a Hispanic male (6’1 200lbs, aged 20-25) with curl hair in a pony tail and a black t-shirt. The vehicle was a maroon Toyota SUV. Report number 100920920

08:10 am       San Bruno/Somerset          Battery

Officer Martinez and Officer LaRocca responded to the report of an assault. The victim, a MUNI bus driver, said he was driving his route when a passenger asked to be let off at a non-designated stop. The passenger, angry that she could not be let off, then slapped the driver on his face. The driver stopped the bus and the passenger fled. The suspet was described as an African-American female (5’6 160lbs, aged 20-23) wearing a dark jacket with green pajama type pants. Report number 100920964

12:07 pm       200 blk Murray                    Att. Hot Prowl Burglary

Officer Chang and Officer Park were dispatched to the report of a burglary. The victims, who live in separate units in the same house, said that they had interrupted a burglary. The suspect had placed a recycling bin under a window in an effort to reach the window. The suspect was prying open the window’s screen when the resident walked in and confronted the suspect. The other resident heard the shouting, and came outside and gave chase to the suspect, who ran away. The suspect was described as an African-American male (5’5 135lbs, aged 14-16) wearing a large white t-shirt and blue jeans. He also had a small blue backpack with him. Report number 100921677

Officer Archilla and Officer Gonzalez responded to the report of vandalism. The victim said that he came out to his parked car to find that it had a nail in one of its tires. The car had been parked with no damage to its tires. Report number 100923140

Captain's Message 10/04/10

I've been writing in the newsletter and speaking at community meetings about car break-ins for many weeks.  We know the criminals are breaking into several parked cars in a row.  We know they smash out the windows, but not opening the doors, so alarms don’t sound.  We know that “shaved keys” are sometimes used to steal cars.  We know from some witness accounts, that the criminals are using cars to drive in and away from their target locations.

Ingleside plainclothes teams made a significant arrest early this morning.  The suspect was initially spotted at Diamond and Surrey (Glen Park) as he looked into parked cars.  He was then observed at Harper and Laidley, where he was followed into Noe Valley to 28th Street and Sanchez from a distance.  The suspect was able to quickly steal a car and drive off.  Officers attempted to pull over the suspect, but he sped off.  The attempted traffic stop was terminated due the suspect’s reckless driving behavior.  The suspect then drove onto highway 101.  The CHP found the suspect in South San Francisco, where he crashed into a guard rail. 

The suspect was on felony probation for a stolen car.  He had two shaved keys and suspected narcotics in his possession.

What makes this significant, besides being a great arrest, is how the suspect covered a wide range of territory and what actions he took to achieve his goal.  He travelled from Glen Park to the Noe Valley to case cars and eventually to steal a car.  He wasn’t committing crimes of opportunity; he was “on a mission.”  We don’t know if he was going to use that stolen car to return to the other parked cars to break into them and make a quick get away.  This was just one person, but there certainly are others.  We ask you to be vigilant and report suspicious persons and activity to the police.

12:16 am       Mission/Sickles                   DUI/Suspended Lic

Officers McCall and Lozano responded to a call of an intoxicated person driving.  The officers located the vehicle driving on Mission St and conducted a traffic stop.  The driver was found to be heavily intoxicated and was unable to perform the Field Sobriety Tests.  The suspect was also driving with a suspended license. The officers took the suspect into custody and booked him at County Jail.  Report number 100917892

07:35 pm       Unit blk Theresa                 DUI/ Cocaine/Hit & Run

Officers Pereira and Gomez responded to a vehicle collision and heard that the driver had fled the scene and was being pursued by a witness.  The officers located the suspect and detained him.  The witness was also located.  The officers observed that the suspect exhibited signs of intoxication and the suspect admitted to having consumed several alcoholic beverages.  The officers had the suspect perform the Field Sobriety test which he did not complete satisfactorily.  The suspect was placed under arrest.  The suspect was found to be in possession of cocaine powder as well.  The suspect was taken to County Jail where he was booked.  Report number 100919939

Officers Hermosura and Contreras observed a vehicle driving without headlights and conducted a traffic stop.  The officers contacted the occupants and found that the driver did not have a drivers license or any form of valid identification.  The passenger had an open container of alcohol on his lap.  The passenger was cited and released at the scene.  The driver was taken to Ingleside Station where his identify was verified and found to be different from the name he had previously given the officers.  A search of the suspect revealed that he possessed 48 individually packaged “rocks” of cocaine.  The suspect was booked at Ingleside Station.  Report number 100920607

A man reported to Officers Ma and Seavey that he and his adult step-son had a physical fight and that the suspect had fled the area in his car.  The victim had a laceration on the bridge of his nose. Officers searched for the suspect to no avail.  The victim was treated at an area hospital.  Report number 100917995

03:30 am       Unit blk Ocean        Battery/Vandalism to Property

Officers Hermosura and Contreras responded to a possible hot prowl burglary call and met with the caller.  The caller stated that it sounded like someone was breaking into a lower unit and directed the officers to a side entrance.  The officers found the door broken, but locked.  They entered the home and found the female resident who told them that a male friend was over and was high on methamphetamine.  The suspect battered her and when she attempted to call for the police he ripped the phone from the wall.  The suspect then fled the house, breaking the door when he left.  The victim was not injured.  The officers searched for the suspect to no avail.  Report number 100918254

Officers Khan and Ferronato responded to a vandalism call.  The officers met with the victim who stated that he saw an Asian male, 18-25 years old, in a black windbreaker jacket, crouching behind his vehicle.  The victim turned on an outside light and the suspect fled on foot.  The victim then saw that both side rear view mirrors were pulled off, two tires were punctured and that the rear license plate on the vehicle had been removed.  The officers searched for the suspect to no avail.  Report number 100918248

Officers Jones and Morse responded to a shots fired call and found a vehicle and a residence damaged, but no injuries.  The owner of the vehicle was not available, but the residents of the unit were home and asleep when the shots entered their home.  The couple and their young child were unharmed.  No witnesses were located.  Report number 100918282

Officer Muro responded to a broken window call and found that a window was broken.  Officers Muro and Najarro conducted a walk-through of the building.  SFFD responded and secured the opening and the property manager was later contacted regarding this incident.  Report number 100918351

A store manager called for the police to report a broken window.  Officer Johnson responded to the scene and found that no entry was made and no merchandise had been stolen.  Report number 100918646

PSA Knuckles was approached at Ingleside Station by a woman who told him that and unknown suspect had vandalized her vehicle several times with red writing.  The vandalism washed off, but due to the repetitive incidents she wanted the crimes documented.  Report number 100919177

Sgt. McDevitt was flagged down by a victim who told him that an unknown suspect had stolen the catalytic converter from his vehicle while it was parked and unattended overnight.  Report number 100919525

Officers Johnson and Obot observed a vehicle with an equipment violation and pulled it over.  The officers contacted the driver who stated that he did not have his drivers license in his possession and provided the officers with his name and date of birth.  The officers were unable to match the information in a computer search and the driver gave them his real name.  The driver was found to have a suspended license and numerous warrants for his arrest.  The driver was taken into custody and found to have methamphetamine and narcotics paraphernalia in his possession.  The suspect was taken to Ingleside Station and booked.  Report number 100916800

A woman was yelling at the corner of Mission and Kingston prompting someone to call 911.  Officers Morse and Jones responded to the call at that location and met with the woman who claimed to have been robbed.  The officers conducted a lengthy investigation and later determined that the woman had injected alcohol and/ or narcotics and had caused a disturbance in a business causing the proprietor to remove her.  There was no merit to a robbery.  The woman was found to have a warrant for her arrest and was taken into custody and booked at County Jail.  Report number 100917842

PSA Knuckles was approached at Ingleside Station by a woman who told him that she had received numerous threatening text messages from a man who is a friend of a friend.  She was disturbed by the content of the messages.  Report number 100919218

Officers Obot and Johnson responded to a shooting call and found the victim inside of a public housing unit.  The officers spoke with the victim who had been shot in both legs numerous times.  The victim was uncooperative with the investigation, but a witness stated that the suspects were two African American males in their late teens, wearing dark clothing.  The victim was taken to SFGH for treatment. A Hispanic male, 18-22 years old held up a man at knifepoint and stole his cigarettes and lighter.  Two other male suspects stood nearby.  Officer Anderson responded with other Ingleside officers who searched the area for the suspects.  The suspect asked the victim if he was a gang member and then pulled a knife and demanded his property.  The victim was not injured and the suspects ran away together on foot.  Report number 100917494

Officer Chew located a man drinking a beer in public.  The officer contacted the man who was belligerent and failed to comply with lawful commands given to him, resisting arrest.  The officer took the suspect to the ground and effected the arrest.  The suspect was later cited and released from Ingleside Station.  Report number 100913339

A man walked into Ingleside Station and told PSA Guituan that he had been beaten by two men. The victim stated that he was waiting at a bus shelter when two men in a vehicle stopped near him and asked him if he was a gang member.  The victim assured the suspects that he was not, but they parked the car and approached him.  One suspect punched the victim on the head and the other knocked him over.  Both suspects then kicked the victim repeatedly until two Good Samaritans intervened and the suspects ran away. Officer Rosiak and Sergeant Escobar responded to a business and met with the victim who showed them graffiti vandalism to the building exterior.  The victim did not have any potential suspect information for the officers.  Report number 100912927

A restaurant alarm was activated at 3:00 am and the business owners were notified, but did not respond.  The police were not notified.  The owners discovered that there was indeed a burglary when they responded to the store for opening in the morning and found that the back of the restaurant and office had been entered and money and equipment was stolen.  Officer Padilla responded and prepared the report.  Report number 100912604

Officer Muro responded to a theft call.  A known suspect stole the wallet and car keys of the victim from his home when they had an argument.  Report number 100912325

SFPD Wilderness Program Update

On Thursday September 30, 2010 the Wilderness Program provided a day hike to Angel Island State Park.  Paul Revere Elementary participated with 11 students from the student council learning to be leaders, 2 school staff, and 2 officers.

Sergeant Lozada was on patrol when he saw a vehicle commit multiple moving violations. After stopping the vehicle, Sgt Lozada could smell the odor of marijuana coming from inside. A search showed that the driver was in possession of the drug. He was issued a citation for his moving violations and the marijuana. Report number 100909811

Officer Hom and Officer Cassinelli were on patrol when they saw a vehicle driving with a mechanical violation. They stopped the car and met with the driver. The officers then saw inside the car an open cigarette box with pink pills inside. The pills were ecstasy, and the driver was arrested. Report number 100906500

Officer Pedersen was dispatched to the report of fraud. The victim said that he checked his bank account and noticed that there was $1500 missing from the account. He called his bank, who told him that the money had been withdrawn at ATMs by someone over the course of 2 days in the downtown area of San Francisco.  Report number 100910153

PSA Guituan prepared a report at Ingleside Station regarding a theft. The victim said that she was transferring busses on her way to work when he looked down and saw that her purse was open. She then noticed that she was missing cash and a credit card. The victim thought that the suspect must have been another passenger on the first bus she was on, which was very crowded. Officer Ferronato responded to the report of assault of a MUNI bus driver. The driver had picked up a man who asked several times if the bus went to Sunnydale Avenue. The bus driver told the suspect that the bus only goes as far as Sunnydale and Visitacion Valley. When the suspect got off at Sunnydale and Santos, he slapped the driver on top of his head. The suspect was described as an African-American male, (5’8 160lbs, aged 18-20) wearing a black hoodie and khaki colored pants. Report number 100911559
