Rules and pointers for pedestrians and drivers
Pay attention to reduce your chances of being in an accident
The most important safety tip to reduce pedestrian injuries and fatalities is to pay attention. You can significantly reduce your chances of being in a collision with a motor vehicle by obeying traffic rules and being aware of dangers posed by cars in your vicinity. Make eye contact with drivers if possible and make sure that they can see you.
Both drivers and pedestrians have certain safety responsibilities that depend on both circumstances and common sense.
Drivers must:
  • Yield to pedestrians when crossing a sidewalk or entering an alley or driveway
  • Yield to pedestrians who have started crossing at an intersection or crosswalk on a "walk" signal or a green light, if there is no walk signal
  • Yield to pedestrians who are crossing the highway within a marked or unmarked crosswalk at an intersection where there are no traffic lights or control signals
  • Not overtake and pass any vehicle that stops at an intersection or crosswalk to permit a pedestrian or bicyclist to cross the roadway safely
Pedestrians must:
  • Yield to drivers when crossing a road where there is no intersection or crosswalk or where the pedestrian does not have a green or "walk" signal and where vehicles have a green signal
  • Not suddenly move into the path of a closely approaching vehicle that does not have sufficient time to yield for a pedestrian
  • Walk on and along the left side of a highway when not walking on a sidewalk. Note: This law does not apply to bicycles. Bicycles operate under the same laws as other legal vehicles on the road and should always stay on the right side of the road.

Burglary Alert: A rash of burglaries have been taking place where an odd an unusual technique is being used to gain entry into garages. To date, Ingleside officers have responded to six separate burglary reports that have mostly taken place in the Noe Valley area. Officers have noticed that an unknown suspect(s) has been drilling a one inch diameter circular hole into the top center of the garage door and then using a long hook to pull on the emergency release cord, which disengages the automatic garage door opener. Once the garage door is disengaged the thieves simply lift the garage door and gain entry into the garage and/or homes. Please take steps to secure your garage door. Contact the garage door or automatic garage door opener manufacturer for any preventative safety tips that they may have. Also, if you see anything suspicious, especially at night, at your neighbors’ house or around the neighborhood, don’t hesitate to call the police.

The San Francisco Neighborhood Emergency Response Team (NERT) is free training from the San Francisco Fire Department in how to help yourself and your neighbors prepare for and respond to a disaster by working together. The 20-hour training, taught by First Responders, includes personal preparedness, light search and rescue, disaster medicine, shutting off your utilities, and how to participate as a member of a neighborhood response team.  NERT also offers continuing training for graduates and activities that support building robust neighborhood teams.  For more information, visit the NERT website at http://sfgov.org//sffdnert, or contact Lt. Erica Arteseros at (415)970-2022 or sffdnert@sfgov.org

Are you someone who is interested in disaster preparedness and wants to help out your community while working hand in hand with law enforcement? Then the ALERT program is for you!

                                            What is the A.L.E.R.T. Program?

The ALERT program will train members of the public to assist law enforcement in essential tasks after a major disaster. Such tasks may include: traffic control, foot patrol of business and residential areas, and reporting criminal activity. Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age and live, work, or attend high school in San Francisco.

Three steps to becoming an
A.L.E.R.T. volunteer:
1. Complete NERT training and receive certification. To register for NERT training courses please visit www.sfgov.org/sfnert
2. Once NERT certified, forward a copy of your NERT ID card to the ALERT program. sfpdalert@sfov.org
3. After clearing a basic background check the individual is eligible to register for ALERT training.

An informational meeting will be held on March 6th, 2014, at 7:00pm. The meeting will be held at the San Francisco Police Academy in the parking lot bungalow. This is NOT a mandatory meeting for interested volunteers. Come have your questions answered.

The next training class has been scheduled for May 3rd, 2014, from 8:00am – 5:00pm. This class will be held at the San Francisco Police Academy, in the parking lot bungalow.

Arrests:

4:46pm       Mission/Excelsior                       Assault
An altercation on a MUNI bus resulted in the arrest of a man with a knife. The MUNI driver told Ingleside Officers Pereira and Opler that she was driving northbound on Mission Street when she heard a commotion behind her. She turned around and saw one man arguing with another man. The argument escalated and the MUNI operator pulled over and told the more aggressive combatant to exit the bus. Instead, the passenger walked up to the driver and pulled out a knife and pointed the weapon at her. He then exited the bus and walked away. Ingleside Officers Fung and Vainshtok found the suspect a short distance away and the MUNI driver positively identified him as the man who threatened her with a knife. The suspect was transported to Ingleside Station where he was booked for assaulting a public transportation worker, exhibiting a deadly weapon, and for an outstanding traffic warrant. Arrests:

10:53pm     Unit Blk Excelsior               Drugs
Alert residents called police after noticing a possible car burglar peering into vehicles. Ingleside Officers Nakano and Smith responded and found a man, matching the neighbor’s description, standing on the sidewalk holding a clear plastic sandwich bag in his right hand. When asked what he was doing, the suspect responded, “Just looking around”.  When asked what was in the bag, the suspect just handed it to Officer Smith who suspected it was methamphetamine. A subsequent test proved his suspicions were correct. A records check showed the suspect was wanted on an outstanding warrant. He was transported to the Hall of Justice where he was booked for the warrant and the narcotics offense. Report number: 140155858

Serious Incidents:

4:24pm       Mission/Laura                   Aggravated Assault
A man waiting to start work was violently assaulted by three men. The victim told Ingleside Officers Snadow, Shugars, Cuenca, and Cvetovac that he was sitting in his car waiting for his boss to unlock the door to his business when three men approached him and asked what he was doing and if he was waiting for someone. The victim replied, “What’s it to you?”  One of the three men responded, “I’m just looking out for my neighborhood”.  The victim then asked if they were neighborhood watch and that response apparently angered one of the three men who lifted up his shirt to show a fixed blade knife. The victim told the man he doubted he would use the knife, which prompted that suspect to remove the knife and start stabbing the victim in the arm and head. The victim told the officers that the other two suspects pulled out folding knives and joined in with the attack. After a short while, the suspects stopped the attack and fled on motorcycles. The victim was transported to S.F. General where he was deemed in stable condition for multiple stab wounds.  Report number: 140154612

Program?

The San Francisco Police Department has developed a volunteer citizen disaster preparedness program. The Auxiliary Law Enforcement Response Team (ALERT) is modeled after and works in partnership with the San Francisco Fire Department's Neighborhood Emergency Response Team (NERT).

Arrests:

7:43pm       Mission/College                             D.U.I
Citizens called dispatch to report a possible drunk driver of an older model red Kia in the vicinity of College and Mission Streets and Ingleside Officers Shugars, Snadow, Austin, and Cvetovac responded to the area to search for the vehicle. The officers soon found the vehicle and followed it a short distance while checking the car’s registration. The registration was expired so the officers stopped the vehicle to question the two occupants. The passenger exited the vehicle and was placed in handcuffs when he refused Officer Cvetovac’s request to remain seated in the passenger seat. The driver was ordered out of the vehicle and questioned.  His speech was slurred, he smelled of alcohol, and admitted to drinking a half bottle of wine that evening. He failed several roadside sobriety tests and admitted he didn’t have a valid driver’s license because he had lost the privilege on a previous drunk driving conviction. He also was on felony probation for car theft. Inside the vehicle were four open bottles of wine and the officers noticed wine splatter on the front seats and dashboard. The driver was booked at the county jail for D.U.I. Report number: 140152428
