Traffic Safety Enforcement Operations Plan for San Francisco
                                       with OTS Grant

The San Francisco Police Department will conduct Traffic Safety Enforcement Operations on September 15th, 18th, 22nd, 25th and 29th with a focus on bicycle and pedestrian safety. Over the past three years, the department has identified areas where significant numbers of pedestrian and bicycle-related collisions have occurred and responded by deploying additional officers to those areas in an effort to prevent deaths and injuries. Special attention will be given to Focus on the Five violations: excessive and unsafe speed, unsafe turns, failure to stop for signs and signals, failure to yield to pedestrians in cross walks, as well as any other dangerous violation.

San Francisco is committed to eliminating traffic deaths on our streets by 2024 as part of Vision Zero SF. Vision Zero SF is our city’s commitment to prioritize safe streets for everyone.

Bicycle and pedestrian fatalities are rising in California as more people use these non-motorized means of transportation. In 2013, California witnessed 701 pedestrians and 141 bicyclists killed, accounting for more than 28 percent of all traffic fatalities.

All riders are reminded to always wear a helmet – those under 18 years of age must wear helmets by law. Pedestrians should cross the street only in marked or unmarked crosswalks at corners. All motorists are reminded to be mindful of others who share the road.

Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Arrests:

2:00pm       900 Blk. Geneva                        Aggravated Assault
A dispute over some unknown reason resulted in one combatant in the hospital with a serious brain injury and another suspect in jail. Both were charged with aggravated assault and the suspect in jail for attempted homicide. The dispute began when one suspect, possibly under the influence, walked into a restaurant and began yelling at customers challenging them to a fight. Restaurant employees got him to leave the restaurant only to see him return a short time later with a man and woman in pursuit. This time the man in pursuit and the suspect started fighting and throwing restaurant furniture around. One of the combatants carried a stick taken from outside and beat the other combatant several times in the head and body knocking him unconscious. Ingleside Officers Gomez, Cagney, Peralta, Grabbe, Hopkins, and Vong arrived to survey the crime scene and call for medical assistance. One of the combatants was taken to San Francisco General Hospital where physicians diagnosed bleeding in his brain. He was charged with aggravated assault. The other combatant with the stick was charged with aggravated assault and the additional charge of attempted murder. Report number: 170736876

Serious Incidents:

11:00am     4500 Blk. Mission                      Theft
A customer entered a shoe store and picked out a pair of red Champion running shoes. He then walked past the counter and out of the store without paying. The clerk told Ingleside Officers Wise and Aros the same man came back two hours later, wearing the stolen shoes, and selected three different pairs of shoes. He again left the store without paying, but this time an unknown customer stopped the thief outside. The two struggled and the customer was able to wrestle away the stolen items and return them to the store. The suspect fled northbound on Mission but returned a short time later wielding a large wooden board. The store employee locked the front door while the suspect paced back and forth in front of the store before fleeing south on Mission Street. Report number: 170737608
