Sept. 23, 2013

Incident Date:
Monday, September 23rd, 2013

The next community meeting at Ingleside Station will be held on October 15, 2013.  Thank you.

Back to School: As summer draws to a close, back-to-school season will be in full effect. Safety should be a priority for every family as children return to classrooms this fall. It’s crucial that all motorists understand how to safely share the roads with school buses, pedestrians and bicyclists. It’s also a good time for parents and children to talk about how to stay safe at school.

Alert:  There has been an increase in auto boosts in the area of Monterey, O’Shaughnessy and Bosworth.  The break ins are occurring around the hours of 9:00am to 12:00pm.  Please report any suspicious activity to the police.  Do not leave valuables in your cars.

Community Police Academy: The San Francisco Police Department is accepting applications from people who are interested in joining the Community Police Academy. This ten week course is designed to inform and teach various aspects of municipal policing. The program covers procedures from patrol and investigations, vehicle operations, arrest and control techniques, firearm procedures and communications/911. The course will run for ten weeks with classes held every Tuesday night from 6:30pm to 9:00pm, starting on October 1, 2013 thru December 17, 2013.  For more information please visit the Community Police Academy website: http://sf-police.org/index.aspx?page=1590

Fraud Warning: Two days ago a San Francisco resident received a telephone call from an unknown subject, who was identifying himself as Captain Moser from the San Francisco Mission Police Station. The subject informed the resident that he was calling to collect an unpaid balance on outstanding parking tickets and that it would take $500.00 dollars to rectify the situation. The subject said the process could be taken care of over the phone with a credit card number. The resident, being suspicious, looked up Captain Moser on Google and saw that he was in fact stationed at Mission Police Station. At this point, the resident was no longer concerned and proceeded to provide the subject with their credit card number. The money was then taken from the resident’s account. Be alert of this new scam taking place. The San Francisco Police Department will never call anyone to collect a debt. If this happens to you, do not provide any of your personal information and hang up immediately.

Crime Alert: Precita Park / Bernal Heights Area;  During the extended labor day holiday there were a total of 32 vehicles stolen in the Ingleside district as of 08/30/2013. Eight of those stolen vehicles were taken from the Precita Park and Bernal Heights area. Be sure to secure your vehicle (windows up, doors locked) before you leave your car parked on the street. Consider looking into getting an alarm or anti theft device such as a steering wheel club. This, for the most part, should deter most culprits from stealing your car. If you want to make it that much more difficult, consider installing a kill switch. Older model Hondas and Toyotas are among the most popular and easiest vehicles to steal.

District Wide Burglaries in the Ingleside: In The Last month of August there have been 7 reported burglaries throughout the district. 4 of those burglaries alone have taken place in the Bernal Heights area. The different methods of entries have been through unlocked windows, sliding glass doors, unlocked side doors, unlocked garages and in one case through a doggie door where the perpetrator squeezed themselves through the small opening. Also, homes under construction have been targeted and expensive tools and appliances have been taken. As the warmer weather of fall approaches, make sure to secure your residence and that all your windows and doors are locked before leaving. If you happen to see any suspicious activity around your neighborhood that looks odd or out of place, call the police immediately.

Crime Alert:  An increase of robberies and thefts has been occurring in and around the Balboa BART Station and City College area. There have been five robberies in the last couple weeks alone in this area. Be vigilant of your surroundings and follow the safety tips below.

A woman trying to rent a DVD at a grocery store was the victim of a severe assault. The victim told Ingleside Officers Thompson and Truong that when she approached the “Red Box” DVD kiosk there was a man standing in front of it perusing the selection. She waited for some time and finally notified a store checker that the suspect had been inspecting the selection for some time. She then went back to the kiosk and waited for several more minutes before finally asking the man if it would be okay for her to move ahead of him and make a selection. At which point, she said the man turned around and told her to “shut up”, called her a stupid b….”, and said he would kick her a..”. The suspect then punched the victim in the face three times before several store employees and bystanders tackled him and pulled him off the victim. The victim told officers that she lost consciousness during the assault. Medics were summoned and she was treated at the scene for a bruised lip. The officers reviewed store surveillance video which clearly confirmed the victim’s description of the incident. The suspect was transported to Ingleside station where officers searched and found two identifications belonging to other people. He was booked on charges of assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury and battery with serious bodily injury. The suspect also had ten outstanding warrants for arrest. The officer responded yes, because you were vandalizing the trash can. The suspect had Massachusetts identification and said he was homeless and had just moved back to San Francisco. Arrests:

1:05am       3400 Blk Mission                             Assault
A fight between two women employees of a drinking establishment was the reason Ingleside Officers Lustenberger, Chew, Jones, Wang, Anderson and Clemente were sent to investigate who hit who and why. When the officers arrived, they found one employee with a swollen forehead and a shirt wet with alcohol. She told the officers that another employee threw a cocktail glass that hit her forehead and then this same fellow employee, grabbed and pulled her hair. Witnesses at the bar confirmed the details of the attack. The officers questioned the other employee who denied attacking her colleague, but admitted she was angry with her because she “stole” one of her customers. She was taken to the county jail and booked for aggravated assault. Case number: 130797498

1:45am       3900 Blk Mission                             Vandalism
Ingleside Officers Lustenberger and Chew were on routine patrol when they noticed a young man kneeling next to a mail box. The officers noticed that the suspect was writing something on the mail box and decided to investigate. They stopped their patrol car and noticed some fresh spray paint on the side of the mailbox. The young man had paint marking items in his possession and quickly confessed saying, “Yeah, it was stupid. I just lost my friend” which was the name he was writing on the mailbox. He was cited for the vandalism and released at the scene. Case number: 130797482

3:56am       Miguel/Arlington                             Stolen Vehicle
Ingleside Officers Hauscarriague and Cariffe were on routine patrol when they noticed something odd about a 2013 Ford van parked along Mission Street. The license plate did not have the “month” expiration sticker. Before they could investigate further, the officers were dispatched to an urgent call in the district. After completing that assignment, they went back to the Mission Street address just in time to see the van pulling out of the parking spot. They followed it a short distance before pulling it over on Miguel near Arlington Streets. Officer Cariffe approached the vehicle and asked the driver for his license. The driver admitted he didn’t have one. While Cariffe was talking to the driver, Officer Hauscarriague ran a computer check on the van, which showed it had been stolen and the vehicle’s license plate belonged to another car. Officer Hauscarriague then called for backup and both he and officer Cariffe ordered the driver and two occupants out of the vehicle at gunpoint. Numerous Ingleside units soon arrived and helped handcuff all the occupants. The driver had a “shaved key” used to steal cars in his pocket. He was also on probation from San Mateo County and had an outstanding warrant for auto theft from Contra Costa County. The woman passenger was also wanted for an outstanding warrant for a probation violation out of San Mateo County. Both the driver and the woman passenger were transported to Ingleside station and booked on several charges. The other male passenger had no record and was released at the scene. Case number: 130735545

Arrests:

6:00pm       3300 Mission Street               Theft
Officer Ocreto and Officer Cvetovac responded to a theft at the Safeway Supermarket located on the 3300 block of Mission Street. Upon arrival, the officers met with both the store manager and the security guard, who said a male suspect came into the store and concealed a container of laundry detergent inside his coat. The suspect then walked out the store without paying for the item. The manager and security guard chased after the suspect and confronted him asking for the item back. The suspect then pulled out a Silver object which both the manager and the guard thought was a knife. They told the suspect that all they wanted was the items back. The suspect had a change of heart and proceeded to put the container on the ground and walked away. Moments later, after broadcasting the suspect description, Sgt Riskin was in the area and detained the suspect not too far away. The suspect was identified and ultimately taken to Ingleside Station and booked for the theft. Report Number: 130793731

The San Francisco Neighborhood Emergency Response Team (NERT) is free training from the San Francisco Fire Department in how to help yourself and your neighbors prepare for and respond to a disaster by working together. The 20-hour training, taught by First Responders, includes personal preparedness, light search and rescue, disaster medicine, shutting off your utilities, and how to participate as a member of a neighborhood response team.  NERT also offers continuing training for graduates and activities that support building robust neighborhood teams.  For more information, visit the NERT website at http://sfgov.org//sffdnert, or contact Lt. Erica Arteseros at (415)970-2022 or sffdnert@sfgov.org

At this point the resident was no longer concerned and proceeded to provide the subject with their credit card number.

Arrests:

1:11am       Raymond/Bayshore                 Auto  Burglary
Police dispatch sent Ingleside Officers Carrasco, Dilag, McMilton, Peregrina, and Dominguez to investigate a report of an auto burglary. Officers Carrasco, Dilag, and Dominguez went to the scene of the crime while the other two officers searched the area for the suspect who was described as 5ft. 10”in. tall, wearing a red cap, black jacket, and white shoes. Carrasco, Dilag, and Dominguez discovered a late model Toyota Scion with a broken passenger window and papers strewn throughout the interior. While Carrasco, Dilag, and Dominguez inspected the car, Officers McMilton and Peregrina radioed they had just stopped the auto burglary suspect near the intersection of Tunnel and Blanken Streets. The suspect, who was on parole had been arrested numerous times for burglary, auto theft, and auto burglary.  He had several auto burglary tools in his possession and there were numerous glass shards on the hood of his sweatshirt, which matched the glass from the Toyota Scion. Due to the fact that the owner could not be contacted or verify if anything was stolen, the officers decided to cite the suspect for being in possession of burglary tools. Report Number: 130787922

2:37am       Sunnydale/Hahn                     D.U.I
A Honda slowly gliding through a stop sign caught the attention of Ingleside Sgt. Greet and Officer Rock. The two followed the car a short distance before stopping the driver. When officer Rock approached the driver to ask for identification, he noticed the overwhelming smell of alcohol. He also noticed the driver’s bloodshot eyes. When asked if he had been drinking that evening, the driver admitted to consuming “almost but probably not quite a dozen beers”. A field sobriety test showed he was intoxicated and a breathalyzer test confirmed it with an initial reading of 0.11 blood alcohol level. The suspect was transported to the county jail for booking. Report Number: 130788005

Serious Incidents:

9:40am       Alemany/Tingley                     Robbery
An Ingleside resident told officers she felt concerned while walking eastbound on Tingley toward the Senior Center on Excelsior Street. What concerned her was a young man who suddenly crossed the street towards her. The man asked the victim for directions to Mission Street and when she started to point up the block, he quickly grabbed and tried to rip the necklaces from her neck. He was unsuccessful but he did manage to wrestle away her shopping bag containing a wallet, California identification, a debit card, and her cell phone. The victim screamed for help but no one responded. So she walked home to call police. Report Number: 130788516

8:44pm       300 Blk Alemany                    Assault
A report of gunshots sent Ingleside Officers Hart and Obot to an apartment house on the 300 block of Alemany Boulevard. When the officers arrived, they found an older Honda Accord with gunshot damage to the left side. Soon thereafter, a resident of the apartment house came out and told the officers that he, the driver, was shot at by an unknown assailant. Two other occupants of the car, who also resided at the apartment house, had the same story. They had parked their car and were entering the apartment house when they heard around 10 shots. All three quickly ran inside their home and called police. A witness told the officers that shortly before the shooting, he observed a white Honda Rav4 slowly circling the block before stopping. After stopping, the witness said a man exited the vehicle, pulled out a gun, and began firing toward the apartment house. All the victims told the officers they had no idea who the suspect was or why anyone would try to harm them. None of the occupants were injured in the incident. Report Number: 130790856
