Traffic Safety Enforcement Operations Plan for
San Francisco with OTS Grant

The San Francisco Police Department will conduct Traffic Safety Enforcement Operations on June 1st, 9th, 12th, 20th and 27th with a focus on bicycle and pedestrian safety. Over the past three years, the department has identified areas where significant numbers of pedestrian and bicycle-related collisions have occurred and responded by deploying additional officers to those areas in an effort to prevent deaths and injuries. Special attention will be given to Focus on the Five violations: excessive and unsafe speed, unsafe turns, failure to stop for signs and signals, failure to yield to pedestrians in cross walks, as well as any other dangerous violation.

San Francisco is committed to eliminating traffic deaths on our streets by 2024 as part of Vision Zero SF. Vision Zero SF is our city’s commitment to prioritize safe streets for everyone.

Bicycle and pedestrian fatalities are rising in California as more people use these non-motorized means of transportation. In 2013, California witnessed 701 pedestrians and 141 bicyclists killed, accounting for more than 28 percent of all traffic fatalities.

Arrests:

1:03pm                    Teresita & Foerster           Battery on a Police Officer
A bicyclist, looking at his cell phone in one hand, rode through a stop sign almost colliding with Ingleside officers Leong and Vong. The officers activated their emergency lights and pulled the cyclist over a short distance away. He refused to give the officers any identification until the officers told him that, without identification, they would have to take him back to Ingleside Station. With that in mind, he decided to cooperate and reached into his backpack, grabbed his wallet and a money clip, and threw both at Officer Vong striking him in the chest. The officers cited the bicyclist for the stop sign violation and battery on a police officer, and released him at the scene. Report number: 170498957

Serious Incidents:

8:09pm                  San Jose & Mt. Vernon                          Robbery
Two teenage girls, walking on the bridge over Highway #280, were approached by unknown man. The victims told Ingleside officer Wells and Hoge that the suspect exchanged small talk with the two women before suddenly punching one of them in the hip.  The suspect grabbed the victim’s iPhone out of her pocket. The suspect then escaped North on San Jose toward the Balboa Park BART Station. The officers gave the victims a ride to their homes and summoned medical help to treat the one victim’s injury.
