Traffic Safety
Enforcement Operations Plan for San Francisco with OTS Grant
The San
Francisco Police Department will conduct Traffic Safety Enforcement Operations
on May 4th, 8th, 16th and 26th with a focus on bicycle and pedestrian safety. Over the past three
years, the department has identified areas where significant numbers of
pedestrian and bicycle-related collisions have occurred and responded by
deploying additional officers to those areas in an effort to prevent deaths and
injuries. Special attention will be given to Focus on the Five violations:
excessive and unsafe speed, unsafe turns, failure to stop for signs and
signals, failure to yield to pedestrians in cross walks, as well as any other
dangerous violation.
San
Francisco is committed to eliminating traffic deaths on our streets by 2024 as
part of Vision Zero SF. Vision Zero SF is our city’s commitment to prioritize
safe streets for everyone.
Bicycle and
pedestrian fatalities are rising in California as more people use these
non-motorized means of transportation. In 2013, California witnessed 701
pedestrians and 141 bicyclists killed, accounting for more than 28 percent of
all traffic fatalities.
All riders
are reminded to always wear a helmet – those under 18 years of age must wear
helmets by law. Pedestrians should cross the street only in marked or unmarked
crosswalks at corners. All motorists are reminded to be mindful of others who
share the road.
Funding for
this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic
Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Arrests:
12:26am Mission & Russia Firearm
Ingleside
Officers Cagney and Dominguez were on routine patrol when they spotted several
men fighting in the middle of the street. The officers, radioed for backup, and
stopped next to the altercation to break up the fight. One of the combatants
entered a black Honda Pilot which was parked nearby. The officers ordered the
combatants and the driver of the Honda out of the car while they secured the
scene. During that process, Ingleside Officer Young noticed several shell
casings and an ammunition magazine on the ground near the front door of the
Honda. The officers searched the Honda and found a firearm inside the vehicle.
The driver of the Honda was a convicted felon and, as such, was not allowed to
have a firearm. He was arrested at the scene and booked. Report number:
