Shot Spotter

Captains Message:

Tonight, Monday, December 20, 2010 from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM, the San Francisco Police Department will conduct "Shot Spotter" testing in the Visitation Valley neighborhood.

What is Shot Spotter?  Shot Spotter is a technological system that is able detect, locate and report gunfire.  It triangulates the sound of gunfire and pinpoints it with a fair degree of accuracy.  It is the same system used in the Bayview, Mission and Northern Districts.

There will be three different locations where the tests will be performed this evening:
1.  Burr and Argonaut
2.  Campbell and Rutland
3.  Mansell and Brussels

About twenty minutes will be spent at each location.  Before any tests begin, an announcement will be made over a public announcement system.  Once the test is done, another announcement will be made that it has ended.

The tests are performed by officers using live ammunition.  The Department's Range Master and Range staff will conduct the actual tests, and strict safety precautions will be adhered to.

I hope you can tell your family and friends who live or work in the Visitation Valley area about this evening's testing to avoid any frayed nerves.  I believe this innovative system will make our neighborhood a safer place.
