Traffic Safety Enforcement Operations Plan for San Francisco
                                                with OTS Grant

The San Francisco Police Department will conduct Traffic Safety Enforcement Operations on November 28th and 30th with a focus on bicycle and pedestrian safety. Over the past three years, the department has identified areas where significant numbers of pedestrian and bicycle-related collisions have occurred and responded by deploying additional officers to those areas in an effort to prevent deaths and injuries. Special attention will be given to Focus on the Five violations: excessive and unsafe speed, unsafe turns, failure to stop for signs and signals, failure to yield to pedestrians in cross walks, as well as any other dangerous violation.

San Francisco is committed to eliminating traffic deaths on our streets by 2024 as part of Vision Zero SF. Vision Zero SF is our city’s commitment to prioritize safe streets for everyone.

Bicycle and pedestrian fatalities are rising in California as more people use these non-motorized means of transportation. In 2016, California witnessed 867 pedestrians and 147 bicyclists killed, accounting for more than 28 percent of all traffic fatalities.

All riders are reminded to always wear a helmet – those under 18 years of age must wear helmets by law. Pedestrians should cross the street only in marked or unmarked crosswalks at corners. All motorists are reminded to be mindful of others who share the road.

Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

A resident working in the kitchen heard a knock on one of his windows but didn’t pay attention thinking it was a delivery driver. He went back to his chores and a short time later he heard another knock on a different window. Now curious he picked up a can of pepper spray and went into the hallway turning toward the front door. He told Ingleside Officers Trujillo and Phillips that he heard a loud cracking from the front door and suddenly an unknown man forced his way through the front door and stood a few feet away from the victim. The homeowner held up the can of pepper spray and yelled, “Go, Go, Go”, and the suspect turned around and fled in an unknown direction. The suspect declined the offer and went home only to return a short time later and again demand the victim return something he didn’t have. Again, the victim told him he didn’t have his phone and again the suspect turned around and left, but not for long.
