San Francisco Police and the SF Public Utilities Commission – Water Department Warn the Public Regarding Recent Utility                          Payment Scam

The San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) and the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) are alerting the public to a recent series of scams in which suspects pose as representatives of “SF Utilities” and demand payment for overdue bills.

The suspects, who contact potential victims by phone, claim that their water bills are overdue and threaten to turn off their water service unless cash payment is made. Customers have been directed to make payment at various drug stores in San Francisco. The suspects sometimes use a device that “spoofs” caller ID devices to display the SFPUC customer service phone number.

These calls are not coming from the SFPUC and at no time does the agency direct customers to pay water bills in person anywhere other than authorized payment locations. For a list of authorized payment locations, click here: http://www.sfwater.org/index.aspx?page=48

The public is cautioned to be wary of such calls and are advised to contact the SFPUC if they have questions regarding their water bill and service. The SFPUC Customer Service Line is (415) 551-3000.

Any SFPUC customers who have received such phone calls may file a suspicious occurrence report at any SFPD district station. Anyone who has been victimized by this scam should file a fraud report with the SFPD. Serious Incidents:

1:30am       700 Blk. Moultrie                    Hot Prowl Burglary
Ingleside Officers Burke and Anderson responded to a report of a home burglary. The woman victim told the officers that a male friend called her and said he wanted to come over and pick up his keys. An hour later he texted her and said he was outside and wanted her to bring him his keys. The victim didn’t feel comfortable going outside to meet the man so she stayed inside. A short time later, she heard a loud crash and soon thereafter the man was inside her bedroom. He pushed her and pulled her hair before grabbing the keys from the dresser and leaving the home. The officers determined the suspect entered the home by breaking a garage window. Report number: 170814579

9:50am       Unit Blk. Chenery                   Attempted Burglary
An apartment dweller heard a loud knock on his front door. The resident told Ingleside Officer Rodriquez that he looked through the little window in the door and saw the back of a man he didn’t know. The resident didn’t open the door. A short time later he saw the door moving as the suspect tried to push it open. The resident opened the door and asked the suspect what he wanted. He told the victim that he was looking for a guy who, he said, went into the apartment. The resident closed the door and went to get a camera. When he returned, the suspect was gone. Officer Rodriquez found another resident of the apartment house who said the same suspect knocked on her back door and said he was there to fix electrical issues. When she didn’t open the door, he fled. Report number: 170815301

2:00pm       800 Blk. Foerster                   Hot Prowl Burglary
Ingleside Officers Ocreto and Calupad were dispatched to a report of a burglary that had occurred moments before. When they arrived at the address they found a husband, wife and their caretaker. The caretaker told the officers she had just finished cleaning and was entering the kitchen when she was suddenly surprised by an unknown man standing in the room holding a crowbar. The suspect told her, “I won’t hurt you. Just sit there and don’t move.” She sat down and soon there was a second suspect who joined them in the kitchen. The second suspect watched her as the first suspect went through the home looking for valuables. Both suspects then quickly left the home taking cameras, cash, and electronics. The officers determined the suspects entered the home by using the crowbar to force open the front gate and the front door. Report number: 170816246

7:29pm       100 Blk. Tioga                        Attempted Arson
A woman spotted a suspect climbing over her fence and into her backyard. The victim ran downstairs and made sure the back door was locked and then ran upstairs to call police. While waiting for Ingleside Officers Marshall and Tupper to arrive, she heard the suspect knocking on the downstairs window. She watched as he took out a small torch and placed the flame against the window frame. The woman heard her mother entering the front gate of their home so she ran downstairs and kept her mother outside to wait for police. The officers entered the home and searched without success for the suspect who they surmised had escaped over the backyard fence. Report number: 170817028

11:00pm     3300 Blk. Mission                  Robbery
A security guard noticed a customer standing in the checkout line with soda, chips, and several packages of meat. When the line didn’t move fast enough, the suspect walked out of the store into the parking lot. The guard attempted to stop the suspect and recover the bag of meat. But instead of relinquishing the meat, the suspect punched the store employee in the mouth and ran away. Ingleside Officers Cortez and Dominquez responded and talked to the victim who refused medical attention. The officers also requested surveillance video of the suspect. Report number: 170817551
