Traffic
Safety Enforcement Operations Plan for
San
Francisco with OTS Grant
The San Francisco Police Department will conduct Traffic
Safety Enforcement Operations on June 1st, 9th, 12th, 20th and 27th with a
focus on bicycle and pedestrian safety. Over the past three years, the
department has identified areas where significant numbers of pedestrian and
bicycle-related collisions have occurred and responded by deploying additional
officers to those areas in an effort to prevent deaths and injuries. Special
attention will be given to Focus on the Five violations: excessive and unsafe
speed, unsafe turns, failure to stop for signs and signals, failure to yield to
pedestrians in cross walks, as well as any other dangerous violation.
San Francisco is committed to eliminating traffic deaths on
our streets by 2024 as part of Vision Zero SF. Vision Zero SF is our city’s
commitment to prioritize safe streets for everyone.
Bicycle and pedestrian fatalities are rising in California
as more people use these non-motorized means of transportation. In 2013,
California witnessed 701 pedestrians and 141 bicyclists killed, accounting for
more than 28 percent of all traffic fatalities.
All riders are reminded to always wear a helmet – those
under 18 years of age must wear helmets by law. Pedestrians should cross the
street only in marked or unmarked crosswalks at corners. All motorists are
reminded to be mindful of others who share the road.
Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California
Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration.
Arrests:
8:14pm John F. Shelley & Cambridge Battery of Police Officer
Ingleside
officers Scott, Hardy, and Officer Cortez-Cendejas were on routine patrol when
they spotted a Toyota with expired registration. The officers stopped and asked
the occupants to step out of the vehicle. Both complied and the officers noted
the male was wearing an ankle monitor. He told the officers that the car
belonged to a friend. However, they couldn’t name the friend. The officers
decided to tow the car to impound pending contact with the registered owner. During
the interview the female occupant suddenly became combative, spitting at one of
the officers and threatening violence. She was taken to Ingleside Station where
she continued to spit, yell, and even tried to bite one of the officers. She
was booked for assault. Her male companion was cited for expired registration
and released at the scene. Report number: 170494842
11:04pm Unit Blk. Francis Battery of Police Officer
A
report of a fight between two men sent Ingleside officers Young, Wong, Sherry,
Salazar, Parker, and Mroz to investigate. When the officers arrived on scene
they found the two combatants standing on opposite sides of the street. One of
the men was intoxicated, acting erratic, and refused the officers commands to
calm down. For the purpose of the officer’s safety, he was placed in handcuffs.
But instead of calming down, he spat at
and kicked two of
the officers on scene. He was taken to Ingleside Station and booked for battery
and public intoxication. Report number: 170495157
