Traffic
Safety Enforcement Operations Plan for
San
Francisco with OTS Grant
The San Francisco Police Department will conduct Traffic
Safety Enforcement Operations on June 1st, 9th, 12th, 20th and 27th with a
focus on bicycle and pedestrian safety. Over the past three years, the
department has identified areas where significant numbers of pedestrian and
bicycle-related collisions have occurred and responded by deploying additional
officers to those areas in an effort to prevent deaths and injuries. Special
attention will be given to Focus on the Five violations: excessive and unsafe
speed, unsafe turns, failure to stop for signs and signals, failure to yield to
pedestrians in cross walks, as well as any other dangerous violation.
San Francisco is committed to eliminating traffic deaths on
our streets by 2024 as part of Vision Zero SF. Vision Zero SF is our city’s
commitment to prioritize safe streets for everyone.
Bicycle and pedestrian fatalities are rising in California
as more people use these non-motorized means of transportation. In 2013,
California witnessed 701 pedestrians and 141 bicyclists killed, accounting for
more than 28 percent of all traffic fatalities.
All riders are reminded to always wear a helmet – those
under 18 years of age must wear helmets by law. Pedestrians should cross the
street only in marked or unmarked crosswalks at corners. All motorists are
reminded to be mindful of others who share the road.
Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the
California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration.

Safeway security personnel noticed a man placing items in his
backpack and walking out of the store without paying. The security officer went
outside and asked the man to return the items to the store. He refused. The
guard began taking pictures of the suspect with her cellphone which prompted
the suspect to hit the guard in the face with a closed fist. The suspect then
fled on a bicycle south on Mission Street. The loss was items worth less than
$25. Ingleside officers Ocreto and Chan arrived to investigate the incident.
Medical personnel transported the security officer to St. Luke’s Hospital for

his hands. He told the officers that he was drinking with a man in the park
when the two got into an argument. He said the suspect took a metal pipe lying
on the ground nearby and hit him in the stomach. The suspect then escaped.
