Safe Shopper 2016 - Holiday Season Safety Tips

During this holiday season, the San Francisco Police Department will be working to enhance safety for residents, visitors and shoppers. There will be increased foot patrols in shopping areas throughout the city, including the horse/mounted unit, plainclothes officers and traffic enforcement.

“The San Francisco Police Department wishes everyone a happy holiday season,” said Interim Chief Toney Chaplin. “We also want this season of giving to be memorable and safe for you and your loved ones. Here are some tips that will help keep you safe.”

• Stay alert when using electronic devices. Limit your distractions.
• Always be alert to your surroundings and have your keys in your hand as you approach your vehicle.
• Park Smart: Help avoid vehicle break-ins, leave nothing visible in your car. Consider moving your vehicle to a different location each time you load packages in the trunk. Try to use parking lots where there are parking attendants.
• Keep your wallet in a hard-to-reach place and carry only the cash and credit cards that you will need to complete your shopping.
• If someone demands your purse, wallet, or packages, surrender them, make note of the suspect’s description and direction they flee and call 911. Property can be replaced.
• If you see something, say something. If you witness criminal activity or see something or someone suspicious, flag down a police officer, call 911 or contact security.
• Shop with a companion, especially after dark, whenever possible.

Ingleside Officers Malatesta and Archilla spotted a man exiting an address where that had been numerous previous arrests for narcotics, gambling, and related crimes. The suspect was known to be on parole and Malatesta and Archilla stopped the suspect who readily admitted that he had missed his last meeting with his parole officer. Serious Incidents:

11:45pm     1100 Blk. Munich                            Robbery
A man exited a #43 Muni bus and was walking home when he noticed three fellow passengers following him. The victim reached his front steps, but instead went to his garage entrance and waited until the three men walked passed his address. The victim then ran to the front door of his home, with his house key in his hand, when the three suspects suddenly ran up with one of them saying, “Don’t open the door. I have a gun”. The suspects then took his IPad from his hands, cell phone, wallet, work ID card, backpack, and house keys before warning him, “Don’t call police. I have your keys. I’ll kill you”.  The suspects then fled on foot westbound on Naples. The victim ran to a neighbor’s home who called police. Ingleside Officers McCall and Lozano arrived shortly thereafter to interview the victim and search the neighborhood for the suspects without success. Report number: 161015966
