The San Francisco Neighborhood Emergency Response Team (NERT) is free training from the San Francisco Fire Department in how to help yourself and your neighbors prepare for and respond to a disaster by working together. The 20-hour training, taught by First Responders, includes personal preparedness, light search and rescue, disaster medicine, shutting off your utilities, and how to participate as a member of a neighborhood response team. NERT also offers continuing training for graduates and activities that support building robust neighborhood teams. For more information, visit the NERT website at http://sfgov.org//sffdnert, or contact Lt. Erica Arteseros at (415)970-2022 or sffdnert@sfgov.org
Are you someone who is
interested in disaster preparedness and wants to help out your community while
working hand in hand with law enforcement? Then the ALERT program is for
you!
What is the
A.L.E.R.T. Program?
The San Francisco Police Department has developed a
volunteer citizen disaster preparedness program. The Auxiliary Law Enforcement
Response Team (ALERT) is modeled after and works in partnership with the San
Francisco Fire Department's Neighborhood Emergency Response Team (NERT). The
ALERT program will train members of the public to assist law enforcement in
essential tasks after a major disaster. Such tasks may include: traffic
control, foot patrol of business and residential areas, and reporting criminal
activity. Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age and live, work, or attend
high school in San Francisco.
Three steps to becoming an
A.L.E.R.T. volunteer:
1. Complete NERT training and receive
certification. To register for NERT training courses please visit www.sfgov.org/sfnert
2. Once NERT certified, forward a copy
of your NERT ID card to the ALERT program. sfpdalert@sfov.org
3. After clearing a basic background
check the individual is eligible to register for ALERT training.
6:29am 400 Blk Geneva Stolen Motorcycle/Stolen Property
Officer Connell and Sgt Kumli had just started their shift and
were pulling out of the station onto San Jose Avenue when a motorcycle without
headlights caught their attention. Officer Connell made a quick U-turn in order
to stop the motorcycle rider, but he caught wind of what the officers were going
to do and decided to accelerate from the area at a high rate of speed. Officer
Connelly and Sgt Kumli quickly followed from a short distance away and could
see the rider losing control of the motorcycle as it wobbled uncontrollably
down the street. The rider suddenly jumped off the bike and fled on foot
towards the Balboa BART Station. Both Sgt Kumli and Officer Connely followed
suit and followed the suspect down to the BART station. With the help of several
bystanders, they were able to locate the suspect next to the BART tunnel. He
was taken into custody without incident. Sgt Kumli contacted the owner of the
motorcycle, who had just reported it stolen minutes before they spotted it on
San Jose Avenue. A search of the suspect revealed shaved keys in his pocket
which is commonly used to start various vehicles. He was booked on numerous
felony charges including probation violation. Report Number: 140765225

Officer Flood, of the
San Francisco City College Police Department, was sent to the Wellness Center
to investigate a possible non-student/homeless individual taking a shower in
the men’s locker room. Officer Flood, assisted by Sgt Gaytan, located the
subject who said he was not a student but was using the shower while he was
waiting for a friend. A computer check showed the subject was currently on
probation and had several warrants for his arrest. Officer Flood and Sgt Gaytan
arrested the subject and searched his backpack. Inside they located some
methamphetamine, marijuana, two knives, several syringes and a meth pipe.
Suffice to say he was booked for the drugs and weapons along with the
outstanding warrants. Report Number: 140767378
