Rules and pointers for pedestrians and drivers
Pay attention to reduce your chances of being in an accident
The most important safety tip to reduce pedestrian injuries and fatalities is to pay attention. You can significantly reduce your chances of being in a collision with a motor vehicle by obeying traffic rules and being aware of dangers posed by cars in your vicinity. Make eye contact with drivers if possible and make sure that they can see you.
Both drivers and pedestrians have certain safety responsibilities that depend on both circumstances and common sense.
Drivers must:
  • Yield to pedestrians when crossing a sidewalk or entering an alley or driveway
  • Yield to pedestrians who have started crossing at an intersection or crosswalk on a "walk" signal or a green light, if there is no walk signal
  • Yield to pedestrians who are crossing the highway within a marked or unmarked crosswalk at an intersection where there are no traffic lights or control signals
  • Not overtake and pass any vehicle that stops at an intersection or crosswalk to permit a pedestrian or bicyclist to cross the roadway safely
Pedestrians must:
  • Yield to drivers when crossing a road where there is no intersection or crosswalk or where the pedestrian does not have a green or "walk" signal and where vehicles have a green signal
  • Not suddenly move into the path of a closely approaching vehicle that does not have sufficient time to yield for a pedestrian
  • Walk on and along the left side of a highway when not walking on a sidewalk. Note: This law does not apply to bicycles. Bicycles operate under the same laws as other legal vehicles on the road and should always stay on the right side of the road.

Burglary Alert: A rash of burglaries have been taking place where an odd an unusual technique is being used to gain entry into garages. To date, Ingleside officers have responded to six separate burglary reports that have mostly taken place in the Noe Valley area. Officers have noticed that the unknown suspect(s) have been drilling a one inch diameter circular hole into the top center of the garage door and then using a long hook to pull on the emergency release cord, which disengages the automatic garage door opener. Once the garage door is disengaged the thieves simply lift the garage door and gain entry into the garage and/or homes. Please take steps to secure your garage door. Contact the garage door or automatic garage door opener manufacturer for any preventative safety tips that they may have. Also, if you see anything suspicious, especially at night, at your neighbors’ house or around the neighborhood, don’t hesitate to call the police.

The San Francisco Neighborhood Emergency Response Team (NERT) is free training from the San Francisco Fire Department in how to help yourself and your neighbors prepare for and respond to a disaster by working together. The 20-hour training, taught by First Responders, includes personal preparedness, light search and rescue, disaster medicine, shutting off your utilities, and how to participate as a member of a neighborhood response team.  NERT also offers continuing training for graduates and activities that support building robust neighborhood teams.  For more information, visit the NERT website at http://sfgov.org//sffdnert, or contact Lt. Erica Arteseros at (415)970-2022 or sffdnert@sfgov.org

Are you someone who is interested in disaster preparedness and wants to help out your community while working hand in hand with law enforcement? Then the ALERT program is for you!

                                            What is the A.L.E.R.T. Program?

The San Francisco Police Department has developed a volunteer citizen disaster preparedness program. The Auxiliary Law Enforcement Response Team (ALERT) is modeled after and works in partnership with the San Francisco Fire Department's Neighborhood Emergency Response Team (NERT). The ALERT program will train members of the public to assist law enforcement in essential tasks after a major disaster. Such tasks may include: traffic control, foot patrol of business and residential areas, and reporting criminal activity. Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age and live, work, or attend high school in San Francisco.

Three steps to becoming an
A.L.E.R.T. volunteer:
1. Complete NERT training and receive certification. To register for NERT training courses please visit www.sfgov.org/sfnert
2. Once NERT certified, forward a copy of your NERT ID card to the ALERT program. sfpdalert@sfov.org
3. After clearing a basic background check the individual is eligible to register for ALERT training.

The next training class has been scheduled for May 3rd, 2014, from 8:00am – 5:00pm. This class will be held at the San Francisco Police Academy, in the parking lot bungalow.

Arrests:

12:34am     Sunnydale/Bayshore                           Drugs
Ingleside Sgt Martin was on routine patrol when he spotted a blue pickup truck parked at the end of a vacant and dark cul-de-sac on a stormy evening. Sgt Martin drove slowly up to the truck and noticed a man standing in the rain outside the vehicle. When Sgt Martin asked what he was doing there, the man answered, “Waiting for my girlfriend to return. She jumped the fence”.  For his safety, Sgt Martin requested backup and soon Ingleside Officers McMilton and Peregrina arrived. When asked if he had any weapons, the man admitted he had a gun in the bed of his pickup truck. A search of his clothing revealed a significant quantity of methamphetamine in several of his pockets. The suspect admitted he was addicted to meth and had used a quantity of the drug earlier in the day. He was transported to Ingleside Station and booked for a narcotics violation. The paintball gun found in the bed of the pickup was held as evidence along with the narcotics and a search for the suspect’s girlfriend turned up empty. Report number: 140191028

2:11am       200 Blk Precita                                   D.U.I
A homeowner heard a loud crash and looked out the window to see that a white Mitsubishi Montero had crashed into several parked cars. Using his cell phone camera, the witness photographed the driver of the car, and then after stepping outside, took video of the driver exiting his vehicle and walking away. Ingleside Officers Buckley, Jones, and Bautista arrived at the scene and found the driver a block away. Officers found a marijuana pipe in one of his pockets and the suspect admitted he did not have a medical marijuana license.
The suspect’s breath had a strong odor of alcohol, his eyes were red and bloodshot, his speech was slurred, and he admitted to Officer Buckley that he was too drunk to drive. He failed all parts of the field sobriety test and a breath test revealed a blood alcohol reading almost three times the legal limit of 08%. The suspect was arrested and booked into the county jail. Report number: 140191175

11:22am     Mission/Ocean                                   Drugs
Ingleside Officers Leong and Garon-Fermo responded to a report of a possibly intoxicated man damaging parked vehicles with a shopping cart. They quickly located the suspect standing next to his shopping cart, sweating profusely, and talking to himself. A search of his clothing turned up a quantity of crystal methamphetamine. A search of the criminal database revealed the man was on felony probation for burglary. He was taken to Ingleside Station and booked for narcotics possession and probation violation. Report number: 140192355

Serious Incidents:

9:16pm       Church/Valley                                   Robbery
Two men assaulted and robbed a pedestrian of his wallet, cash, bank cards, and identification. The victim told Ingleside Officers McMilton and Peregrina that he was walking on Church Street near Valley, when two men wearing “Hoodies” approached him and asked for money. When the victim said he didn’t have any funds, one of the suspects punched him in the nose causing the victim to fall to the ground. The suspects then reached into the victim’s pocket, took his wallet, and ran away. Report number: 140194458
