Back to School: As summer draws to a close, back-to-school season will be in full effect. Safety should be a priority for every family as children return to classrooms this fall. It’s crucial that all motorists understand how to safely share the roads with school buses, pedestrians and bicyclists. It’s also a good time for parents and children to talk about how to stay safe at school.
Mail Fraud Alert: Recently, an Ingleside Resident received an official looking letter in the mail claiming she had won $250,000.00 dollars from an International sweepstakes. The company “Global Processing Inc.” gave the appearance of sending the resident a check in the amount of $4,685.00 dollars to cover the processing fee when in fact the “check” was fake. The Nigerian letter is an advance fee fraud, a form of a confidence trick, which calls for the victim to try to deposit the fake check into their bank account and reimburse the company with a personal check to cover the fee. By the time the bank discovers the fake check is fraudulent, it’s too late. The victim is out $4,685.00 dollars. Be aware, the scam preys on people who are more trusting and the elderly. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. The resident who received this letter found misspelled words and found it very suspicious. She then forwarded the letter to Captain Falvey, so that he may spread the word and prevent others from being a victim.
ALERT: There has been an increase in auto boosts in the area of Monterey, O’Shaughnessy and Bosworth. The break ins are occurring around the hours of 9:00am to 12:00pm. Please report any suspicious activity to the police. Do not leave valuables in your cars.
Recently, a flyer was distributed to the community regarding scams targeting the monolingual Chinese. These scams involve telling the victim that an evil spirit is following them. They will ask the victim to bring valuables to pray over as an offering to the spirit. They will return to the victim what is believed to be their valuables. They will ask the victim not to look at their valuables for a day. When the victim later checks their valuables, they find that the valuables were not returned by the suspects.
We urge all person(s) confronted with this scam to call 911 as this is a crime in progress. By contacting 911, you greatly increase the chance of catching the suspect(s) so that the police can make an arrest. If someone approaches you with this scam, decline their help, call 911 immediately and report it to the police. Be a good witness. Obtain a description of the suspect(s) and/or vehicles they are driving.

CRIME ALERT: An increase of robberies and thefts has been occurring in and around the Balboa BART Station and City College area. There have been five robberies in the last couple weeks alone in this area. Be vigilant of your surroundings and follow the safety tips below.

9:52am 200 Blk Day Stolen Vehicle
An employee of the Upper Noe Recreation Center called in a suspicious vehicle stating that there was someone sleeping inside a parked vehicle with the engine on. Officers Pereira and Aguayo responded to the area and located the parked Honda Accord. They found the male suspect sleeping inside and tried to wake him up to no avail. For safety reasons, Officer Pereira entered the vehicle and turned the ignition off. Officer Aguayo opened the driver door and had to physically shake the male suspect in order to get him to wake up. After gathering the suspect’s information, Officer Aguayo ran a computer check, which showed the suspect to have an outstanding felony warrant for his arrest. Officer Aguayo did some more research which showed the vehicle to be stolen as well. The suspect was immediately taken into custody. Officer Pereira inspected the ignition key and saw that it was a shaven down Toyota key, which is a common tactic used by common thieves to enter and/or steal vehicles. The suspect was transported to Ingleside Station and booked accordingly. Report Number: 130713773
12:40pm Unit Blk Castillo Robbery
A robbery victim was walking home when he noticed a suspect walking towards him and asked the victim to use his phone. The victim handed over the phone and instead of using it the suspect put the phone in his pocket. The victim asked, “What are you doing?” The suspect then pulled out a handgun and pointed it at the victim. Fearing for his life, the victim told the suspect to keep the phone. The victim immediately ran home and called the police telling dispatch that the suspect just fled the scene in a Black Mazda vehicle. Moments later, Officer Aslam and Walsh arrived and began tracking the victim’s phone. Officer Aslam was able to ping the phone and kept the responding units updated on the phones current location, which was showing at Mission and Trumbull Street. Officers Barcojo, Chin and Sgt Hoo were listening to the broadcast and happened to be at the right place at the right time because they saw the Black Mazda vehicle speeding past them. The officers got behind the vehicle in an attempt to pull it over, but instead lead them in a vehicle pursuit. The officers followed the vehicle as it sped through city streets having no regard for the safety of the pedestrians and vehicles on the street. Several Ingleside units joined in on the chase, pursuing the suspect vehicle through the Ingleside and Mission Districts. The suspect thought he would try to lose the officers by pulling into a driveway and sneak out of the area on foot, but the officers were right behind and apprehended the suspect. A search of the suspect turned up the victim’s phone and a search of the vehicle revealed a pellet gun that was made to look like a real handgun. The vehicle that the suspect was driving was also a stolen vehicle. The suspect was ultimately taken to Ingleside Station and booked on a several felony charges. Report Number: 130714260
6:45pm Alemany/Niagara Robbery
A victim had just gotten of a MUNI bus at Mission and Geneva Avenue and was headed home. When he was in the area of Alemany and Mt. Vernon, he said he heard footsteps rapidly approaching him from behind, when suddenly two suspects confronted him. They asked the victim for the time and proceeded to check his pockets taking his wallet and cell phone. As the two suspects started to walk away, they turned around and gave the victim his phone back. The victim took advantage of the fact that he got his phone back to call the police. He provided dispatch with the suspect’s description and direction of travel. Officers Archilla and Yuen happened to be patrolling their beat when the call came out and observed the two suspects walking towards the intersection of Mission and Geneva Avenue. When the two suspects saw the officers they split up and headed in two different directions. The officers caught up to one of the suspects and detained him, while they let other Ingleside Officers know that the second suspect was still outstanding. During the investigation, the one suspect that was detained managed to escape. He didn’t get too far because Officer Archilla, Yuen and Sgt’s Lozada and Martin were right behind him, taking him into custody a block away. Moments later, Officer Paras, who was still searching the area, said he had located the second suspect who had now ducked into a local business. The second suspect refused to cooperate and decided to fight with the officers. After a brief struggle, he was taken into custody suffering a few cuts and bruises in the process. The victim identified both suspects as the ones who robbed him moments earlier. Both suspects were charged with Robbery, conspiracy as well as resisting and delaying. Report Number: 130715434

10:32pm 5700 Blk Mission Burglary: Suspect #1; White male, Approximately 18 to 24 years old, 5’10 in height, about 200 pounds. Last seen wearing a Beige baseball cap and unknown color shorts. Suspect #2; Asian male, 18 to 20 years old, 5’11 in height, about 180 pounds. Last seen wearing a Black hoodie and jeans.
