Recently, a flyer was distributed to the community regarding scams targeting the monolingual Chinese. These scams involve telling the victim that an evil spirit is following them. They will ask the victim to bring valuables to pray over as an offering to the spirit. They will return to the victim what is believed to be their valuables. They will ask the victim not to look at their valuables for a day. When the victim later checks their valuables, they find that the valuables were not returned by the suspects.

By contacting 911, you greatly increase the chance of catching the suspect(s) so that the police can make an arrest. If someone approaches you with this scam, decline their help, call 911 immediately and report it to the police. Be a good witness. Obtain a description of the suspect(s) and/or vehicles they are driving.
