Weather related crime alert; with the current nice weather and increased temperature, some people are leaving their windows open in an effort to keep their residences cooler inside. Be extra careful, especially when you leave your home and leave the windows unsecured. Burglars are always looking for the easiest way inside your home. Don’t give them that opportunity for the easy access. Make sure to secure these entry points and leave them locked when you are not around.
Public Safety; In light of recent events at the Boston marathon, the police department will be increasing patrols in areas where the public gather including special events. If you see a suspicious package that does not look right or does not belong in the area, do not investigate it yourself. Create a safe distance between you and the suspicious package and do not use your cell phone to call the police. Use a landline to call “911” and provide your location and if possible the description of the package. Officers will be dispatched to assess the situation and take the appropriate action.
Arrests:
4:50am Cotter/Mission D.U.I
Officers Gabriel and Zerga responded to Mission and Sickles on a call of an accident that actually took place approximately a mile and a half away at Mission and Cotter Street. They spoke to the victim of the accident, who said he was on duty while driving his Sunset Scavenger garbage truck, when he came upon a vehicle double parked and blocking the street on the unit block of Cotter Street. The victim said he approached the vehicle and noticed that the driver was fast asleep behind the wheel with the engine off. He then knocked on the window to get her attention. The driver abruptly woke up, started her vehicle and proceeded to back up, colliding into the garbage truck. She then pulled forward and drove off as if nothing happened. The victim, believing the female driver was under the influence of alcohol, got in his truck and followed the female suspect to Mission and Sickles where she parked her vehicle. He then called the police, while keeping an eye on her until the officers arrived. The officers went to speak to the female driver and immediately could see that she had bloodshot, watery eyes and a strong odor of alcohol on her breath as well as inside of the vehicle. The officers also saw a partially filled can of beer and half empty bottle of rum in the center console. After a thorough investigation, the officers believed the female driver was driving her vehicle under the influence of alcohol and proceeded to arrest her. She was booked on a D.U.I as well as not having a driver’s license or insurance. Report Number: 130391686
8:55am Unit Blk Santa Rosa Stolen Vehicle
Officers Graham and Pereira responded to a call regarding a suspicious male who was seen switching license plates from two vehicles. The officers arrived and spoke to the witness, who said she was looking out her window and observed the subject removing a license plate from a parked vehicle and attaching it to the vehicle he was in. The witness thought this was highly suspicious and decided to grab her camera and start taking photos of the suspect. She told the officers that the suspect kept looking around to see if anyone was watching him. After attaching the license plate, the suspect got into the Toyota Scion and drove away. While interviewing the witness, Officer Pereira saw the same suspect walking back towards them. The witness immediately identified the suspect as the same subject she saw switching the plates. The officers detained him and questioned him. The suspect denied everything and said he was coming from the BART station. The officers searched him and found a screwdriver and Toyota scion key. They then searched the area and found the vehicle parked a block away. The suspect told the officers that the owner of the vehicle was inside a business along Mission Street. The officers went to that location and found the owner, who told the officers that someone had stolen his vehicle. The victim said he set his car keys down for a moment and when he went to retrieve them, they were gone. The suspect was subsequently arrested and booked on various charges including grand theft auto. Report Number: 130392123

4:10pm Mission/Russia Theft
Officers Quintero and Ocreto were dispatched to the area of Mission and Russia regarding a cell phone theft from a person. They spoke to the victim, who said she was sitting at the MUNI bus stop texting on her Iphone, while waiting for the bus. Moments later, a suspect approached her from behind, reached around her and quickly grabbed her phone out of her hands. The suspect then fled on foot headed eastbound on Russia from Mission Street. The victim immediately got up and gave chase, but stopped about a block away as the suspect was too fast. She lost sight of him and called the police. The victim advised she had tracking on her Iphone, but was not activated at the time of the incident. The victim was not injured and refused any medical treatment. Report Number: 130393284
