“The San Francisco Police Department wishes everyone a happy holiday season,” said Interim Chief Toney Chaplin. “We also want this season of giving to be memorable and safe for you and your loved ones. Here are some tips that will help keep you safe.”

• Stay alert when using electronic devices. Limit your distractions.
• Always be alert to your surroundings and have your keys in your hand as you approach your vehicle.

• Keep your wallet in a hard-to-reach place and carry only the cash and credit cards that you will need to complete your shopping.
• If someone demands your purse, wallet, or packages, surrender them, make note of the suspect’s description and direction they flee and call 911. Property can be replaced.

Arrests:

7:11am       200 Blk. Judson                         Stolen Credit Cards
Ingleside Sergeant Kumli and Officer Hill were on routine patrol when they spotted a man standing in the front yard of a home with what appeared to be makeup streaming down his face. Thinking he might be in distress, the officers stopped to question the individual. When the officers got closer, they recognized the man as an individual they had arrested numerous times before for methamphetamine abuse and burglary. Next to the suspect was a drawstring bag and a laptop bag and a torch lighter. Beside him, and in plain view in the bushes, was a syringe containing what eventually tested as heroin. Inside the bags were several stolen id’s that did not belong to the suspect. There were also BART tickets, Yellow Cab vouchers, numerous credit cards, debit cards, Casino resort cards, Clipper Cards, and other stolen items. There was also a flashlight and screwdriver which are used by burglars to enter cars and homes. The suspect was taken to Ingleside Station and booked on a variety of theft and narcotic charges. Report number: 161006799

Serious Incidents:

11:00am     5700 Blk. Mission                       Extortion

The woman told Police Services Aide Bruce that a short time before she received a phone call from a woman who said she was with the victim’s nephew and they needed $5000 to pay for accident damages. The woman said they would come to her home to pick up the money in a few hours. The line then disconnected. An hour and a half later the same woman called and asked the victim to transfer the money to an account. The victim said she panicked and hung up the phone. An hour later the suspect called again and the victim asked to speak to her nephew. A man got on the phone and the victim recognized the man was not her nephew. The suspect then got angry and said she would drive to the victim’s home and kill her if she didn’t transfer the money. The victim hung up the phone and drove to Ingleside Station to report the crime. After filing a report, the victim elected to stay with her daughter until after the holidays. Report number: 161017605

A citizen was possibly saved from serious harm by an alert witness. The victim told Ingleside Officers Hopkins, Malatesta, Campos and Filamor that he was walking south on Moscow street, past the fire station, when he noticed three men following him. The victim’s phone and headphones were in a jacket pocket. The victim turned west on Italy when two of the suspects ran up and yelled, “Hey, what kind of phone do you have?” The victim didn’t answer and instead started running down Italy Avenue. He fell while escaping, and the suspects quickly surrounded him. Two of them started punching him in the face before one of the suspects said, “Let’s go. They’re calling the cops”. The “they” was a woman, in her car, who witnessed the attack and started blowing her vehicle horn while dialing 911. She also followed the suspects as they ran into Crocker-Amazon Park. The victim was taken to San Francisco General Hospital and treated for his injuries and then released. Report number: 161008369

SFPD and Walgreens Kick Off 2016 Holiday Toy Drive

In collaboration with Walgreens drugstores, the San Francisco Police Department today launched its 2016 Holiday Toy Drive, benefitting the City’s children in need.

From November 18 to December 19, SFPD will be accepting donations of new, unwrapped toys at more than 60 San Francisco Walgreens locations. The goal is to exceed last year’s toy drive, in which approximately 2,500 items were donated at 30 Walgreens stores for distribution to San Francisco children.

“Everyone can make a difference in a child’s life,” said Interim Police Chief Toney Chaplin. “San Franciscans are generous, thoughtful people and we believe they will step up to brighten the holidays for children and provide happy memories for years to come. We thank Walgreens for doing their part again this year to help San Francisco youth.”

Donors can purchase or drop off a new, unwrapped toy at any San Francisco Walgreens that features a brightly colored and marked toy drive collection bin. Those unable to drop off a toy may also contribute to a Go Fund Me account (https://www.gofundme.com/sfpdtoydrive2016) established by the San Francisco Police Foundation to purchase toys for underprivileged children this holiday season.

Safe Shopper 2016 - Holiday Season Safety Tips

During this holiday season, the San Francisco Police Department will be working to enhance safety for residents, visitors and shoppers. There will be increased foot patrols in shopping areas throughout the city, including the horse/mounted unit, plainclothes officers and traffic enforcement.

• Park Smart: Help avoid vehicle break-ins, leave nothing visible in your car. Consider moving your vehicle to a different location each time you load packages in the trunk. Try to use parking lots where there are parking attendants.
• Keep your wallet in a hard-to-reach place and carry only the cash and credit cards that you will need to complete your shopping.
• If someone demands your purse, wallet, or packages, surrender them, make note of the suspect’s description and direction they flee and call 911. Property can be replaced.
• If you see something, say something. If you witness criminal activity or see something or someone suspicious, flag down a police officer, call 911 or contact security.
• Shop with a companion, especially after dark, whenever possible.
