Are you someone who is interested in disaster preparedness and wants to help out your community while working hand in hand with law enforcement? Then the ALERT program is for you!

                                            What is the A.L.E.R.T. Program?

The San Francisco Police Department has developed a volunteer citizen disaster preparedness program. The Auxiliary Law Enforcement Response Team (ALERT) is modeled after and works in partnership with the San Francisco Fire Department's Neighborhood Emergency Response Team (NERT). The ALERT program will train members of the public to assist law enforcement in essential tasks after a major disaster. Such tasks may include: traffic control, foot patrol of business and residential areas, and reporting criminal activity. Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age and live, work, or attend high school in San Francisco.

Three steps to becoming an
A.L.E.R.T. volunteer:
1. Complete NERT training and receive certification. To register for NERT training courses please visit www.sfgov.org/sfnert
2. Once NERT certified, forward a copy of your NERT ID card to the ALERT program. sfpdalert@sfov.org
3. After clearing a basic background check the individual is eligible to register for ALERT training.

Heat wave:  Many residents are leaving their windows and doors open in an effort to keep cooler as the temperature increases during these gorgeous sunny days. Be extra careful, especially when you leave your home, paying attention to secure the windows and doors when you leave. Burglars are always looking for the easiest way inside your home. Don’t give them the opportunity for the easy access. Make sure to secure these entry points and leave them locked when you are not around. A third of all the burglaries committed in the Ingleside district during the month of April were due to open garages and unlocked or open windows. Also, remember to keep hydrated with lots of water!!

Muni Related Thefts/Robberies: Commuters who take public transportation have been targeted by cell phone thieves. In the last couple weeks there has been two incidents involving MUNI related thefts and robberies here in the Ingleside District. In one of the cases, witnesses told the officers at the scene that the suspect was watching the victim as she focused only on her smart phone, paying no attention to her surroundings. When the bus stopped, the suspect snatched the phone from her hand and ran off the bus. If you’re not paying attention to your surroundings, you’re wearing a target on your back. Smart phone owners need to be aware that thieves may be watching you and ready to snatch your devices. The following is some common advice to avoid becoming a victim: Always be aware of your surroundings. If the bus is going to stop, stop what you are doing, look up, look around and put your phone down or put it in your pocket. And when the bus is in movement again you can go back to looking at it.

Arrests:

2:03am       Dolores/San Jose           Stolen Vehicle

The officers trailed the vehicle for a few blocks while radioing for assistance. The vehicle stopped in a driveway on the unit block of 28th Street and all three occupants started running away. Officer Alday chased the driver on foot for several blocks, finally finding him hiding under a car on 28th street. The driver was booked for vehicle theft, resisting arrest, and being an unlicensed driver. He was also wanted on a “no bail” warrant out of San Mateo County.  Report number: 140490046

Arrests:

3:18am       900 Blk Geneva            Battery
A report of a landlord-tenant dispute was investigated by Ingleside Officers Jones and Deering. The landlord claimed one of her tenants hadn’t paid rent in over three months and attacked her in her room early in the morning. The tenant had a different story. She said it was the landlord who was physically and verbally aggressive. The tenant claimed the landlord had been yelling at her all day and refused to let a friend and fellow tenant visit her apartment. Both parties filed Citizen’s Arrest Forms and both parties were cited and released.  Report number:140504506

1:36pm       100 Blk Blythdale                   Counterfeit
Ingleside Officers Uang and Hopkins were on routine patrol when they heard a broadcast of several individuals recklessly riding dirt bikes (off trail motorcycles) in the area. When the dirt bike driver suddenly came upon the officer’s patrol car, he tried to elude it, but couldn’t, and set the bike onto the ground near the police car. The officers attempted to place the unlicensed driver into custody but the suspect, who was on parole for firearms violations, violently resisted. He was handcuffed and a search of his clothing turned up a quantity of counterfeit money. He was taken to Ingleside Station and booked on a variety of serious charges. Three individuals who attempted to interfere with the arrest were also placed in custody.  Report number: 140508627

5:37pm       Chenery/Miguel            Robbery
Police officers used a cell phone tracking application to catch a violent robber. Ingleside officers Cunningham and Morse interviewed the victim who told them that he was walking near the intersection of Miguel and Chenery when a man approached him and said, “Give me your…..phone or I’ll shoot you”. The suspect pulled out what appeared to be a firearm and struck the victim on the side of the head while grabbing the victim’s cell phone from his hand and money from one of his pockets. The suspect then escaped eastbound on Miguel to Arlington and then North on Arlington. The officers were able to utilize Apple’s “Find my IPhone” application to track the stolen device to the 100 block of  Bonview where Officers Canning and Cabillo had detained a suspect with the phone and a replica handgun. The victim was brought to the scene and he positively identified the man as the one who had robbed him earlier. The suspect was arrested and transported to the City Jail for booking.  Report number: 140509302

8:02pm       Unit Blk Edinburgh     Robbery
A woman parking her car in front of her home was a robbery victim. She told Ingleside Officers Cvetovac and Cuenca she had stopped her car in her driveway and got out to open her garage door. When she returned and entered the car, a man appeared and asked her for the time. When she said, “she didn’t know”, he reached across her body and grabbed her purse that was lying on the passenger seat. He then quickly ran away while the victim exited her car and yelled, “Stop him! He stole my purse”. Several other units searched the surrounding neighborhood for the suspect, including Officer Duffin who spotted the thief a few blocks away on Vienna Street. After a chase, the suspect was placed into custody and the victim was brought to the scene. She positively identified him as the man who took her property. Her purse was recovered, minus her driver’s license and a debit card, under a nearby vehicle. The suspect was taken to Ingleside Station and booked for robbery. Report number: 140509766

8:07pm       Naples/Silver                 Attempted Robbery
A suspect arrested for an earlier robbery was also suspected to have attempted to rob a woman walking near the intersection of Naples and Silver of her possessions. Numerous witnesses identified the man as the suspect who punched a woman in the face several times during the robbery attempt.  Additional charges were added upon booking him into custody.  Report number: 140509829

Serious Incidents:

1:00am       Mission/Silver               Robbery
A Muni passenger told Ingleside Sgt. O’Neal that another passenger stole his headphones. The victim said he was sitting in an aisle seat when the thief walked up and demanded his headphones. When the victim refused, the robber grabbed the headphones and exited the bus. The victim was not injured and believed he could identify the suspect.  A search of the area was negative for the suspect and video footage was requested from MUNI.  Report number: 140487065

5:55am       Cambridge/Pioche        Robbery
A woman walking from her home to the bus stop was robbed of her purse. She told Ingleside Officer Lim that when she arrived at the corner of Silver and Cambridge she noticed a man across the street sitting at a bus stop. The man got up, walked across the street, and grabbed her purse, before escaping in an unknown direction. The loss was a wallet, identification, keys, and money. The victim was not injured and does not believe she could identify the suspect.  Report number: 140507685

The suspects then returned to their car and sped away. The victim was taken to San Francisco General and treated for his injuries.  He was unsure if he could recognize the assailants.  Officers searched the area for the suspects and the vehicle to no avail.  Report number: 14058702

Arrests:

3:30pm       Crescent/Porter             Graffiti
Officers Nicholas and Leong responded to the call of graffiti on a MUNI bus.  A man who was riding MUNI Bus, Line 23, told them he was sitting in the back of the bus when he noticed two males tagging on the back of the bus, on the seats, floors and windows with white paint. The man told the two individuals to stop when he noticed that white paint was getting on his shoes. He called the police and the suspects ran off.  Officer Stewart responded and interviewed him.  Officer Stewart dispatched the description of the two subjects over the radio for other units to search the area. Officer Duffin spotted two males that fit the description on a MUNI bus and stopped the bus. Both suspects were both detained and placed in handcuffs. Later, when Officer Duffin put down one of the subject’s backpack, he saw that it was open and located two bottles of white shoe polish. Both suspects had white paint on their hands as well.  The suspects were positively identified by the witness and were taken to Ingleside Station where they were booked for possession of burglary tools and vandalism. A record check revealed one of the suspects to be on active parole and a parole hold was also placed on him.  The officers took pictures of the vandalism as evidence and contacted MUNI dispatch to request a copy of the video surveillance.  Report number: 140506160

A Message from the Public Utilities Commission:

“A Call to Conserve Water”

We didn’t get enough rain or snow this winter – plain and simple. The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) is officially asking all customers to voluntarily reduce water use by 10%.

Conservation is easy; turn off the faucet while brushing teeth or soaping hands; shorten shower time; install water-efficient showerheads and faucet aerators; replace older toilets and clothes washers with new water-efficient models; and, fix leaks.  Please visit sfwater.org/conservation for more information. The SFPUC offers an array of conservation assistance including free water-saving devices, free Water-Wise evaluations for homes, apartment buildings and businesses and rebates for water-efficient toilets and clothes washers.

Everyone needs to do their part to help us stretch our limited Hetch Hetchy Water Supplies. Conserve today and save for tomorrow.

A MESSAGE FROM MUNI:

HISTORIC STREETCAR FACILITY RELOCATION & ROUTE CHANGES
As part of an ongoing effort to improve service reliability, the Cameron Beach facility located at San Jose and Geneva Avenues has been undergoing track improvements.  Effective June 21, 2014, historic MUNI streetcars located at Cameron Beach facility will be relocated.  The J-Church line historic streetcars are being moved to an alternate light rail maintenance facility (Muni Metro East Light Rail Maintenance Facility known as MME) on Third Street in order to repair their current maintenance facility at San Jose and Geneva Avenues.  The historic streetcars will no longer operate along the J-Church line on Church Street and San Jose.  The historic streetcars are not expected to return to this location after the project is completed.  Historic streetcars will enter and leave F-line service via the T-Third Street line instead of the J-Church line.  The J-Church light rail service will be unaffected and will operate as currently scheduled.

The San Francisco Neighborhood Emergency Response Team (NERT) is free training from the San Francisco Fire Department in how to help yourself and your neighbors prepare for and respond to a disaster by working together. The 20-hour training, taught by First Responders, includes personal preparedness, light search and rescue, disaster medicine, shutting off your utilities, and how to participate as a member of a neighborhood response team.  NERT also offers continuing training for graduates and activities that support building robust neighborhood teams.  For more information, visit the NERT website at http://sfgov.org//sffdnert, or contact Lt. Erica Arteseros at (415)970-2022 or sffdnert@sfgov.org

NERT will hold a Personal Readiness Workshop in the Ingleside in June 2014.

Arrests:

11:34pm     Mission/Murray  Narcotics
Sgt. Smith initiated a traffic enforcement stop on a bicyclist who was riding on the sidewalk.  A record check revealed two outstanding warrants and the suspect was taken into custody.  An arrest search located a plastic baggie with a crystallized substance believed to be Methamphetamine.  The suspect was booked at Ingleside station and a presumptive test for the narcotic returned positive.  The narcotics were hand delivered to the Narcotics Drop Box at the Hall of Justice.  Report Number 140504158
