Rules and pointers for pedestrians and drivers
Pay attention to reduce your chances of being in an accident
The most important safety tip to reduce pedestrian injuries and fatalities is to pay attention. You can significantly reduce your chances of being in a collision with a motor vehicle by obeying traffic rules and being aware of dangers posed by cars in your vicinity. Make eye contact with drivers if possible and make sure that they can see you.
Both drivers and pedestrians have certain safety responsibilities that depend on both circumstances and common sense.
Drivers must:
- Yield to pedestrians when crossing a sidewalk or entering an alley or driveway
- Yield to pedestrians who have started crossing at an intersection or crosswalk on a "walk" signal or a green light, if there is no walk signal
- Yield to pedestrians who are crossing the highway within a marked or unmarked crosswalk at an intersection where there are no traffic lights or control signals
- Not overtake and pass any vehicle that stops at an intersection or crosswalk to permit a pedestrian or bicyclist to cross the roadway safely
Pedestrians must:
- Yield to drivers when crossing a road where there is no intersection or crosswalk or where the pedestrian does not have a green or "walk" signal and where vehicles have a green signal
- Not suddenly move into the path of a closely approaching vehicle that does not have sufficient time to yield for a pedestrian
- Walk on and along the left side of a highway when not walking on a sidewalk. Note: This law does not apply to bicycles. Bicycles operate under the same laws as other legal vehicles on the road and should always stay on the right side of the road.
Crime Alert: Many people are out and about enjoying this unseasonably warm weather during these winter months, but many people are focused on their electronic devices and unaware of their surroundings. Burglary trends are on the rise as well as robberies, especially in the Excelsior District. If you’re walking along and headed to or from your destination, be vigilant of your surroundings. Don’t let yourself be a target and have valuable items exposed for everyone to see. If you leave any windows or doors open to help cool down during the warm weather, remember to shut and lock them before you leave your home. Burglary suspects are on the look-out for an easy way into your house. They will climb, crawl, scale and squeeze themselves through any opening to get to your valuable belongings. Don’t hesitate to call the police if you see anything suspicious.
The San Francisco Neighborhood Emergency Response Team (NERT) is free training from the San Francisco Fire Department in how to help yourself and your neighbors prepare for and respond to a disaster by working together. The 20-hour training, taught by First Responders, includes personal preparedness, light search and rescue, disaster medicine, shutting off your utilities, and how to participate as a member of a neighborhood response team. NERT also offers continuing training for graduates and activities that support building robust neighborhood teams. What is the A.L.E.R.T. Program?
The San Francisco Police Department has developed a volunteer citizen disaster preparedness program. The Auxiliary Law Enforcement Response Team (ALERT) is modeled after and works in partnership with the San Francisco Fire Department's Neighborhood Emergency Response Team (NERT). The ALERT program will train members of the public to assist law enforcement in essential tasks after a major disaster. Such tasks may include: traffic control, foot patrol of business and residential areas, and reporting criminal activity. Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age and live, work, or attend high school in San Francisco.
Three steps to becoming an
A.L.E.R.T. volunteer:
1. Complete NERT training and receive certification. To register for NERT training courses please visit www.sfgov.org/sfnert
2. Once NERT certified, forward a copy of your NERT ID card to the ALERT program. sfpdalert@sfov.org
3. After clearing a basic background check the individual is eligible to register for ALERT training.
An informational meeting will be held on March 6th, 2014, at 7:00pm. The meeting will be held at the San Francisco Police Academy in the parking lot bungalow. This is NOT a mandatory meeting for interested volunteers. Come have your questions answered.
The next training class has been scheduled for May 3rd, 2014, from 8:00am – 5:00pm. This class will be held at the San Francisco Police Academy, in the parking lot bungalow.

9:12pm Geneva/Alemany Drugs
Officer Padilla and Sgt Alvarez were on routine patrol traveling Eastbound on Geneva Avenue when they spotted a vehicle parked along the Geneva corridor. Inside the vehicle were three occupants, two of whom the officers recognized from prior police contact. The officers had knowledge that the two male occupants were currently on felony probation with a search condition. The officers decided to stop and talk to all three occupants. A search of the two male subjects turned out negative. Sgt Alvarez searched the female and found a small quantity of methamphetamine tucked away inside her bra. She was placed under arrest and taken to Ingleside where she was booked for possession of drugs. The two male subjects were released. Report Number: 140104300
Serious Incidents:
4:00am 1400 Blk Visitacion Robbery/Assault
A man waiting at the bus stop waiting to go to work was the victim of a robbery and aggravated assault. The victim told Officers Vainshtok and Fung that he was waiting at the 91 MUNI bus stop on the corner of Visitacion and Britton Street when two suspects approached him on foot. One of the suspects asked the victim for a cigarette, but he did not have any. The other suspect then reached into the victim’s pants pocket, but the victim immediately swatted his hand away. That suspect then pulled out a gun and put it to the victim’s cheek and said, “Where is your money?” The second suspect then unzipped the victim’s jacket and pulled out his keys, bus pass and wallet. He took the money out and threw the rest of the items on the ground. The suspect then pushed the victim, took out what was described as a box cutter and stabbed the victim in his abdomen. Both suspects ran away eastbound on Visitacion Avenue with the victim’s money. The victim went to work and was later taken to the hospital for treatment. Report Number: 140102661
7:45pm 600 Blk London Robbery
Officers Gonzalez and Kerlegan responded to the 600 block of London Street regarding a robbery. They met with the victim who said she had just gotten of the MUNI 14 Mission line and began walking home. The victim said she reached her home and began approaching the front door. Suddenly, she saw someone walking up the driveway and immediately thought it was her son. Instead, it was an unknown suspect who appeared and began pulling on her purse that she had strapped across her chest. The suspect was pulling with such force that it caused her to fall backwards towards the ground where she struck the concrete with her buttocks and the back of head. The suspect was able to pull her purse away and fled the scene taking with him her I.D card, money and bus pass. The victim was treated by medics at the scene. Report Number: 140104093
7:45pm 4900 Blk Mission Robbery
A victim was headed home when she was robbed near her house. The victim told Officer Gonzalez that she was walking back to her residence on Kenny Alley from London when she suddenly felt someone yank really hard on a bag that she was carrying on her right shoulder. The suspect yanked a second time, causing the straps to break. Once the suspect got a hold of her bag, he made his escape by running up Kenny Alley headed towards London Street. The victim said her father went looking for her bag and found it somewhere on the 600 block of London Street. The victim told Officer Gonzalez that some clothing was missing, but that everything else was accounted for. The victim said she was not injured during the robbery. Report Number: 140104617
