Applications are available online for the 2014-15 PAL Law Enforcement Cadet Academy and Internship Program.

The PAL Cadet program includes an intensive 4-week Summer Cadet Academy (June-July) followed by an SFPD station internship and community service (August through May.) Participant’s ages 14-20 may stay in the program for as many years as they are eligible*

Rules and pointers for pedestrians and drivers

Pay attention to reduce your chances of being in an accident

The most important safety tip to reduce pedestrian injuries and fatalities is to pay attention. You can significantly reduce your chances of being in a collision with a motor vehicle by obeying traffic rules and being aware of dangers posed by cars in your vicinity. Make eye contact with drivers if possible and make sure that they can see you.

Both drivers and pedestrians have certain safety responsibilities that depend on both circumstances and common sense.

Drivers must:

• Yield to pedestrians when crossing a sidewalk or entering an alley or driveway
• Yield to pedestrians who have started crossing at an intersection or crosswalk on a "walk" signal or a green light, if there is no walk signal
• Yield to pedestrians who are crossing the highway within a marked or unmarked crosswalk at an intersection where there are no traffic lights or control signals
• Not overtake and pass any vehicle that stops at an intersection or crosswalk to permit a pedestrian or bicyclist to cross the roadway safely

Pedestrians must:

• Yield to drivers when crossing a road where there is no intersection or crosswalk or where the pedestrian does not have a green or "walk" signal and where vehicles have a green signal
• Not suddenly move into the path of a closely approaching vehicle that does not have sufficient time to yield for a pedestrian
• Walk on and along the left side of a highway when not walking on a sidewalk. Note: This law does not apply to bicycles. Bicycles operate under the same laws as other legal vehicles on the road and should always stay on the right side of the road.

Crime Alert: Many people are out and about enjoying this unseasonably warm weather during these winter months, but many people are focused on their electronic devices and unaware of their surroundings. Burglary trends are on the rise as well as robberies, especially in the Excelsior District. If you’re walking along and headed to or from your destination, be vigilant of your surroundings. Don’t let yourself be a target and have valuable items exposed for everyone to see. If you leave any windows or doors open to help cool down during the warm weather, remember to shut and lock them before you leave your home. Burglary suspects are on the look-out for an easy way into your house.  They will climb, crawl, scale and squeeze themselves through any opening to get to your valuable belongings. Don’t hesitate to call the police if you see anything suspicious.

The San Francisco Neighborhood Emergency Response Team (NERT) is free training from the San Francisco Fire Department in how to help yourself and your neighbors prepare for and respond to a disaster by working together.                                             What is the A.L.E.R.T. Program?

The San Francisco Police Department has developed a volunteer citizen disaster preparedness program. The Auxiliary Law Enforcement Response Team (ALERT) is modeled after and works in partnership with the San Francisco Fire Department's Neighborhood Emergency Response Team (NERT). The ALERT program will train members of the public to assist law enforcement in essential tasks after a major disaster. Such tasks may include: traffic control, foot patrol of business and residential areas, and reporting criminal activity. Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age and live, work, or attend high school in San Francisco.

Three steps to becoming an

A.L.E.R.T. volunteer:

1. Complete NERT training and receive certification. To register for NERT training courses please visit www.sfgov.org/sfnert

2. Once NERT certified, forward a copy of your NERT ID card to the ALERT program. sfpdalert@sfov.org

3. After clearing a basic background check the individual is eligible to register for ALERT training.

An  informational meeting will be held on March 6^th, 2014, at 7:00pm. The meeting will be held at the San Francisco Police Academy in the parking lot bungalow. This is NOT a mandatory meeting for interested volunteers. Come have your questions answered.

The next training class has been scheduled for May 3^rd, 2014, from 8:00am – 5:00pm. This class will be held at the San Francisco Police Academy, in the parking lot bungalow.

A man locked and left his home to drive to a nearby restaurant. When he returned a short time later he found his front gate and door ajar and a couple of robbers rummaging through his belongings. The victim told Ingleside Officers Rueca and Buckley that the suspects were armed with handguns and said they were looking for “Money and weed”. When the victim told them there weren’t any drugs and very little cash in the home, the suspects became more focused in searching the home. They not only ransacked the victim’s room, but also the rooms of two roommates who were not home during the robbery. Finally, after not finding what they were looking for, the two suspects left taking a cell phone and other electronic items. Report number: 140091218

A shoplifter was apprehended by security personnel after she left the store with some liquor without paying. The security officers told Ingleside Officers Garon-Fermo and Morse that they watched as the woman put alcohol and other items in a bag then quickly exit the store by walking past several open register lines. The security officers stopped the woman in the parking lot and held her until Ingleside Officers Morse and Garon Fermo arrived to place her under arrest. A computer query revealed that the suspect had an outstanding arrest warrant from San Mateo County. She was taken to Ingleside Station and placed under arrest. Report number: 140089285

A woman was robbed of her purse and contents after exiting a MUNI bus. The victim told Ingleside Officers Pereira and Lucchetti that she got off the #44 line bus at Silver and Cambridge and walked west on Silver to the stairs next to 747 Silver. When she started walking down the stairs between Silver and Cambridge, she noticed two men walking close behind her. One of the men suddenly grabbed her purse from around her neck. The victim struggled but lost the purse and watched the two men run away.  Ingleside Officers Lustenberger and Chew, while searching the area for the suspects, discovered the victim’s purse at Wilde and Goettingen. The purse, and all its contents except for a small amount of currency, was returned to the victim. Report number: 140089796

Several Ingleside units were dispatched to the area of Wilde and Goettingen Streets to investigate a robbery. Officers Cvetovac and Cuenca were one of the first to arrive and found the victim sitting on the sidewalk with her glasses on the ground, and with several abrasions to her head and face. The woman victim told the officers that she was walking home when she heard rapid footsteps approaching from behind. When she turned around, the suspect grabbed her purse which was slung over right shoulder. She said the robber pulled so hard on the purse that she fell to the ground still clutching the purse strap. The suspect then yelled, “Let it go”, but the victim yelled back, “No”.  As she lay on the ground clutching her purse, the suspect began kicking her in the face several times. Finally, she could no longer hold on to her purse and the suspect took it from her and ran away. The loss was $60 in cash, a cell phone, wallet, and debit card. Report number: 140089843

A woman walked into Ingleside Station to report a robbery. The victim told Ingleside Officer Lockett that she walking away from the Balboa BART station when a man started yelling at her. She kept walking and soon the suspect grabbed her left arm and said, “Hey, b…. give me your s..t”.  The suspect grabbed the victim’s purse and ran away. The loss was her ID, a cell phone, and approximately $400 in cash. Report number: 140090135

6:14am       100 Blk Kingston                           Burglar
A bike owner preparing for an early morning ride helped catch a burglar. The victim told Ingleside Officers Otaguro and Adams that he had opened his garage door and was preparing to leave when he noticed a shadow out of the corner of his eye. He turned just in time to see a man taking off with one of his bicycles. The victim quickly ran after the burglar chasing him westbound on Kingston and then northbound on Mission finally catching up to him at the intersection of 29^th and Mission. He tackled the suspect to the ground, but the suspect got up and ran away leaving the bike. The victim got back on his bike and rode home only to find that his other bike missing from his garage, which was left open during the chase. The victim quickly secured his bicycle in his garage, closed and locked the door, and ran back to Mission Street to see if he could find his other bike. He didn’t find it but he did find the burglar who took his first bike. The victim called police and Officers Otaguro and Adams arrived to place him under arrest. During a search of the suspect, the officers found a set of shaved keys used to steal vehicles. They also discovered the suspect had a warrant for his arrest. The burglary victim signed a citizen’s arrest and the suspect was taken to Ingleside Station for booking. Report number: 140084990

Two alert neighbors did everything right in helping the police capture three burglars. Both residents thought it was suspicious when they noticed three people in a Nissan Maxima parked facing the wrong way across the street from their homes. They watched as a passenger got out of the car, ran up the stairs and knocked on the door of a home then quickly ran down the stairs and re-entered the car which sped away. A short time later, the car returned and parked in front of the same home, this time, facing in the correct direction. The same passenger got out, carrying a small crowbar, and ran up the front stairs to the front door. In a matter of seconds, the burglar, came running down the stairs and jumped into the car which sped away. One of the neighbors called police and Ingleside Officers Chang and Wong arrived in minutes. The officers discovered the front door frame was damaged. The homeowners told the officers they heard a knock on the door and then a loud “bang”, but didn’t open the door. One of the homeowners asked “who is it”, at which point the burglar ran down the stairs, got into the car, which sped away.  Officer’s Chang and Wong broadcast a description of the vehicle and occupants and approximately two hours later, Bayview District officers pulled over the vehicle and occupants on La Salle Street.  One of the neighbors who witnessed the attempted burglary was brought to the arrest scene and positively identified the vehicle and its occupants. The suspects were taken to Ingleside Station and booked for burglary and other charges. Report number: 140085380

• Not overtake and pass any vehicle that stops at an intersection or crosswalk to permit a pedestrian or bicyclist to cross the roadway safely

Pedestrians must:

• Yield to drivers when crossing a road where there is no intersection or crosswalk or where the pedestrian does not have a green or "walk" signal and where vehicles have a green signal
• Not suddenly move into the path of a closely approaching vehicle that does not have sufficient time to yield for a pedestrian
• Walk on and along the left side of a highway when not walking on a sidewalk. Note: This law does not apply to bicycles. Bicycles operate under the same laws as other legal vehicles on the road and should always stay on the right side of the road.

Crime Alert: Many people are out and about enjoying this unseasonably warm weather during these winter months, but many people are focused on their electronic devices and unaware of their surroundings. Burglary trends are on the rise as well as robberies, especially in the Excelsior District. If you’re walking along and headed to or from your destination, be vigilant of your surroundings. Don’t let yourself be a target and have valuable items exposed for everyone to see. If you leave any windows or doors open to help cool down during the warm weather, remember to shut and lock them before you leave your home. Burglary suspects are on the look-out for an easy way into your house.  They will climb, crawl, scale and squeeze themselves through any opening to get to your valuable belongings. Don’t hesitate to call the police if you see anything suspicious.

The San Francisco Neighborhood Emergency Response Team (NERT) is free training from the San Francisco Fire Department in how to help yourself and your neighbors prepare for and respond to a disaster by working together.                                             What is the A.L.E.R.T. Program?

The San Francisco Police Department has developed a volunteer citizen disaster preparedness program. The Auxiliary Law Enforcement Response Team (ALERT) is modeled after and works in partnership with the San Francisco Fire Department's Neighborhood Emergency Response Team (NERT). The ALERT program will train members of the public to assist law enforcement in essential tasks after a major disaster. Such tasks may include: traffic control, foot patrol of business and residential areas, and reporting criminal activity. Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age and live, work, or attend high school in San Francisco.

Three steps to becoming an

A.L.E.R.T. volunteer:

1. Complete NERT training and receive certification. To register for NERT training courses please visit www.sfgov.org/sfnert

2. Once NERT certified, forward a copy of your NERT ID card to the ALERT program. sfpdalert@sfov.org

3. After clearing a basic background check the individual is eligible to register for ALERT training.

An  informational meeting will be held on March 6^th, 2014, at 7:00pm. The meeting will be held at the San Francisco Police Academy in the parking lot bungalow. This is NOT a mandatory meeting for interested volunteers. Come have your questions answered.

Sgt Springer and Officer Opler responded to a call of a brutal attack that occurred at Mission and Lowell Street. Once they arrived the officers found a victim who was bleeding profusely from a stab wound to his neck. The officers found a witness who said he was waiting at the bus stop when he saw a suspect arguing with the victim. The argument escalated when the witness saw the suspect pull out a knife and stabbed the victim in the neck. The suspect then fled the scene accompanied by a female companion. A vehicle stopped and rendered aide to the victim by providing a towel so the victim could apply pressure until help arrived. Several units arrived and scoured the area but were unable to locate the suspect. The victim was transported to the local hospital where he received immediate surgery and remains in critical condition. The case is still under investigation. Report Number: 140082336
