The San Francisco Neighborhood Emergency Response Team (NERT) is free training from the San Francisco Fire Department in how to help yourself and your neighbors prepare for and respond to a disaster by working together. The 20-hour training, taught by First Responders, includes personal preparedness, light search and rescue, disaster medicine, shutting off your utilities, and how to participate as a member of a neighborhood response team.  NERT also offers continuing training for graduates and activities that support building robust neighborhood teams.  For more information, visit the NERT website at http://sfgov.org//sffdnert, or contact Lt. Erica Arteseros at (415)970-2022 or sffdnert@sfgov.org

Are you someone who is interested in disaster preparedness and wants to help out your community while working hand in hand with law enforcement? Then the ALERT program is for you!

                                            What is the A.L.E.R.T. Program?

The San Francisco Police Department has developed a volunteer citizen disaster preparedness program. The Auxiliary Law Enforcement Response Team (ALERT) is modeled after and works in partnership with the San Francisco Fire Department's Neighborhood Emergency Response Team (NERT). The ALERT program will train members of the public to assist law enforcement in essential tasks after a major disaster. Such tasks may include: traffic control, foot patrol of business and residential areas, and reporting criminal activity. Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age and live, work, or attend high school in San Francisco.

Three steps to becoming an
A.L.E.R.T. volunteer:
1. Complete NERT training and receive certification. To register for NERT training courses please visit www.sfgov.org/sfnert
2. Once NERT certified, forward a copy of your NERT ID card to the ALERT program. sfpdalert@sfov.org
3. After clearing a basic background check the individual is eligible to register for ALERT training.

Heat wave:  Many residents are leaving their windows and doors open in an effort to keep cooler as the temperature increases during these gorgeous sunny days. Be extra careful, especially when you leave your home, paying attention to secure the windows and doors when you leave. Burglars are always looking for the easiest way inside your home. Don’t give them the opportunity for the easy access. Make sure to secure these entry points and leave them locked when you are not around. A third of all the burglaries committed in the Ingleside district during the month of April were due to open garages and unlocked or open windows. Also, remember to keep hydrated with lots of water!!

Muni Related Thefts/Robberies: Commuters who take public transportation have been targeted by cell phone thieves. In the last couple weeks there has been two incidents involving MUNI related thefts and robberies here in the Ingleside District. In one of the cases, witnesses told the officers at the scene that the suspect was watching the victim as she focused only on her smart phone, paying no attention to her surroundings. When the bus stopped, the suspect snatched the phone from her hand and ran off the bus. If you’re not paying attention to your surroundings, you’re wearing a target on your back. Smart phone owners need to be aware that thieves may be watching you and ready to snatch your devices. The following is some common advice to avoid becoming a victim: Always be aware of your surroundings. If the bus is going to stop, stop what you are doing, look up, look around and put your phone down or put it in your pocket. And when the bus is in movement again you can go back to looking at it.

Arrests:

No Incidents to Report.

Serious Incidents:

A victim was walking down Amazon Avenue talking on her cell phone when an unknown suspect ran up from behind and snatched her phone from her hand. The suspect then pushed the victim into a wall and ran away. A witness happened to be driving by and immediately stopped and asked the victim what happened. After the victim explained the theft, the witness fled the scene in the direction the suspect had just fled. Moments later, the hero (witness) returned with the victim’s phone and left without saying anything. Officers Dilag and Alyworth responded and searched the area to no avail. The victim thankfully was not injured. Report Number: 140446099

Arrests:

9:41pm       Mission/College                      D.U.I
A car traveling southbound on Mission Street caught the attention of Ingleside Sergeants Nakano and Smith. Both officers were traveling northbound when the southbound driver suddenly veered across the double yellow line and would have collided with the officer’s patrol vehicle if they didn’t take sudden evasive action. Shaken, the officers made a quick U-turn and followed the dangerous driver a short distance as he weaved his way south on Mission Street. They stopped the driver after he entered a nearby gas station. With the help of Ingleside Officer Cabillo the unlicensed and uninsured motorist was given a variety of roadside sobriety tests. He failed them all. He did admit to drinking “Four beers” in the hours before his arrest and told the officers that he understood it was dangerous to drive in his condition. Report number: 140435337

Serious Incidents:

3:42pm       Woolsey/Holyoke                   Robbery
Two men walked into Ingleside Station and told Police Services Aid Cato they were the victim of a robbery the night before. It was a long tale that involved several unwise decisions. The two victims had spent part of the previous night inside a Broadway night club where they met a woman who said she was auditioning to be a dancer at the club. The woman gave the men her phone number and invited them to a party with her girlfriends later on that evening. After leaving the club, the men received a text message to meet her at a South San Francisco hotel. When they went to the hotel they saw the woman standing alone talking to someone on her telephone. When she saw the two men, she quickly got into a late model black Lexus and sped away. Shortly thereafter, the men received another text message asking them to meet her at the intersection of Woolsey and Holyoke Streets. When the men arrived at that intersection they again saw the woman standing on the corner talking on her phone. The men got out of their car and approached the woman who quickly walked away. But, before they could react, four men got out of that same black Lexus and approached the victims with a double barreled shot gun. The men threatened to shoot the victims unless they gave up all their valuables. They suspects left after taking a small amount of cash, keys, and cell phones. Report number: 140434373

Serious Incidents:

12:22am     Unit Blk Madrid            Assault/Attempted Homicide
A violent fight almost cost the life of one of the combatants. Ingleside Officers Biagini and Contreras were the first of many officers who arrived on scene and found the victim in the kitchen bleeding profusely from two knife wounds while being treated by emergency medical personnel. One of the occupants of the residence told the officers she was summoned home by her children who said a housemate was drunk and harassing them.  After the children’s mother and her boyfriend arrived home a fight broke out between the boyfriend and the drunken housemate. During the fight the housemate was stabbed in the neck and chest. After the fight, the boyfriend escaped and remains at large. The victim was rushed to San Francisco General Hospital where he was treated for his injuries and remains in stable condition. Report number: 140430036
