Arrests:

7:25pm       Silver/Madrid                Possession of Stolen Property
Switching license plates is a common practice among car thieves. They take plates from one car and place them on another hoping the police won’t notice. Well, on this date they did. Ingleside Officers Hawkins and Hackard were on patrol when they spotted an older Ford Taurus with plates belonging to a Toyota. The officers followed the Taurus and its two occupants from Silver and Madrid, down Alemany, and onto NB #280 until, with the help of additional units, the vehicle was stopped at King and 5Th Street. The driver was on probation out of Alameda County and so was his passenger. In the back seat was a laptop belonging to a teacher that was stolen recently from a car parked in Burlingame. There were also two cameras with several family pictures of people not known by the driver. The Taurus was last registered almost two years ago because it wouldn’t pass a smog test. So the driver’s mother let him take the plates off her Toyota and put them on the Taurus, so he could drive it illegally. He also didn’t have a valid driver’s license. He was transported to Ingleside Station and booked for possession of stolen property and other crimes. His passenger was released at the scene. Report number: 160063576

Arrests:

4:46pm       400 Blk Cortland                             Stolen Property
A man needed a battery for his electric bicycle and decided to purchase the item at a local store that sells electric bicycles, in fact, the exact brand owned by the customer. Fortunately, or unfortunately, depending upon your point of view, the store had a data base of stolen bicycles. The customer’s bicycle was on that list and the store owner called police. Ingleside Officers Alday and Mbeleke Eteti responded and questioned the customer who said he bought the bicycle ($3500 retail) from a friend for $400. He was arrested for possession of stolen property. He also had a history of arrests for possession of stolen property and drug related crimes. A search of his clothing revealed greetings cards, credit cards, fake identification, and more than $2400 in cash. He was booked at Ingleside Station. The bike, which was stolen last March, was returned to the grateful owner. Report number: 160060566

5:17pm       Unit Block Ruth                              Stolen Auto
A continuing theme of this newsletter is the high rate of thefts involving older Honda’s and Toyotas. On this date, Ingleside Officers Quintero, Seavey, and Sgt. Alvarez were on patrol when they spotted a 1996 Honda Accord traveling southbound on Mission Street. A man and woman were in the car with the man driving. The officers noticed that one of the required license plate stickers was missing from the vehicle and decided to stop the car for further investigation. When they did they discovered that the front license plate did not match the rear license plate. The front license plate belonged on the vehicle which was reported stolen two days earlier. The rear license plate was for another Honda of the same year. That plate was also stolen. The driver was on probation out of San Francisco for a previous conviction for vehicle theft. His license was revoked. He was transferred to Ingleside Station and booked for auto theft. His passenger was released. Report number: 160060306

3:30pm       Sunnydale/Talbert                            Robbery
A Muni passenger on a #9 bus thought it was a good time to check the news on his IPhone. Unfortunately, it also provided an opportunity for five young men to relieve the passenger of his IPhone. The five grabbed the phone out of the victim’s hands and ran off the bus. The victim followed and was able to grab and hold onto one of the suspect’s jackets during the chase. When one of the suspects threatened to fight the victim, the victim demurred and watched the suspects flee. A woman driving by saw the commotion and told the victim to get into her car and started following the suspects while calling police. Ingleside Officers Dominguez, Chew Trail, and Hopkins responded to the call and found all five suspects walking on Leland Street. The victim and the Good Samaritan confirmed their identity. After interviewing the victims two of the five were released to their parents and the other three were booked for robbery at the Juvenile Justice Center. The victim’s IPhone was recovered using the “Find My IPhone App.”. Report number: 160056571

6:53pm       600 Blk Monterey                              Robbery
A man and woman decided to do some grocery shopping. However, they had no intention of paying for the items in their cart. A store security guard watched as the pair pushed their car past the cash registers and into the parking lot. The guard confronted the two and told them to return to the store to pay for them. But, the pair refused. The male suspect then punched the guard several times in the face. They loaded the stolen items into a plastic bag and quickly ran toward and boarded a passing #43 Muni bus.
